Sophos intereference with iTunes syncing between phone and desktop

I was having huge trouble syncing my iPhone 5S and Macbook Pro (OSX10.6.8)

hours on the phone w apple tech support, and sending them all the diagnostic files of my computer, and they determined there was some intereference between Sophos and syncing.

I had to uninstall Sophos to solve the problem.

Now I would like to re-install it- do you know what the issues are, are they still there (I don't know what version of sophos I had but it was at least 2 yrs old)

or how I can avoid this problem?

thank you

There is nothing that springs to mind - no one on the forum has posted the same problem recently.  If the software was installed along time ago, though it may have been up to date in terms of protection, it may have remained on version 8 and version 9 is the latest version.

If Apple didn't tell you the nature of the problem but you want to install Sophos again you can try it (download version 9 from this page).  If it doesn't work you can always uninstall it - as long as the 'fix' wasn't something other than just removing Sophos?

  • Am having the same problem. With both Sophos Anti Virus for Mac and iTunes running, when I establish a USB connection from my Mac to either my iPhone or iPad I get the spinning beach ball of death for about 4 minutes. Using Apple's Activity Monitor, I find that while the beach ball is spinning, Sophos' InterCheck is running and consuming about 17% of CPU. As soon as iTunes is free and clear of the beach ball, InterCheck is observed to have dissapeared.

Is Sophos Anti Virus for Mac trying to scan everything on the iPhone/iPad every time they are connected to iTunes?

    Thoughts and suggestions please.

  • Have gathered more data...

Started Mac in Safe Mode. Sophos AntiVirus Mac (SAVM) was not launched. iTunes ran beautifully, no beach ball when connecting iPhone.

Restarted Mac normally, SAVM launched and running. Opened SAVM preferences and disabled "On Access Scanner." Closed preferences and launched iTunes. It ran beautifully. Quit  iTunes.

Opened SAVM preferences and enabled "On Access Scanner." Launched iTunes and, when plugging in my iPhone, got the   *^$#@(&    beach ball again :-)

Pretty clearly there is a bad interaction 'tween the Sophos software and iTunes when a device is connected.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Marty

    Can you provide:

    • Mac OS X version
    • SAV for Mac version
    • Is this the Home Edition (e.g., not managed by a central console etc., and you installed the free version from sophos.com)
    • iTunes version
    • Phone details (make, model, version of iOS).

If you haven't already tried the Preview of Home Edition v9.1 I suggest giving that a go and testing it - but it would still be good to know details of the current situation if that doesn't resolve the problem or if others post the same problem.

Details of v9.1 and download link: http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/SAV-for-Mac-9-1-Preview/td-p/18025

Thanks - best to be on the latest so if there is still a problem I can ask our development to comment on the issue.

  •  I moved your post to this thread from where you originally posted it as I doesn't seem to be a Tamper Protection issue and more related to this thread.

Pls try upgrading to v9.1 and also post details like  has done.

  • Hi ruckus,

    Here's new data:

    • Installed SAV yesterday, version 9.1.5.
    • First-run with iTunes and plugging in iPhone 5s, got the dreaded BeachBall for several minutes
    • During that time Activity Monitor showed InterCheck reaching over 85% of CPU
    • During that time Activity Monitor showed iTunes as "not responding"
    • Eventually, it resolved with iTunes responding and the iPhone 5s connected and available for sync
    • This morning I did the test again (thining that some data might have been cached by SAV), and got the BeachBall for "only" 90 seconds (by stopwatch)
    • In the terse style of Appollo 13, Shophos, we [still] have a problem :-)
    • On another note, web pages do seem to load a bit faster.

Where can I get an official uninstaller for SAV 9.1.x ?

    Thanks,

    Marty

  • Thanks.  I'll pass the problem to our development team for comment.

As to the uninstaller: The removal app is in Applications and you can search for it in Spotlight.  Failing that there is a standalone removal tool.  More information in the thread below (standalone tool - though it's not required if you have the one in Applications - is mentioned in the fourth post down)...
