can't remove 8.0

I use 8.0 but want to update to 9.0.

somebody on this forum tells that 8.0 should be removed , then install 9.0.

So, I double clicked the Sophos remove in my application folder but nothing happened (nothing I can see).

The APP is broken?

In this case, how can I install the 9.0.

I already downloaded 9.0 but since my MAC still has 8.0, I can't do anything right now.

Thank you for help.

  • There are different editions (cloud (paid+managed), on-premise (paid+managed), standalone (paid), Home Edition (free)) and you can't ugprade from one to another.  For example you may have previously downloaded SAV for Mac 8 from a server at a uni, or a company you work for and then try to upgrade that to v9 of the Home Edition but they aren't the same - companies and uni tend to hand out the on-premise or standalone installer for free to their users and this causes a hitch when moving to the Home Edition.

You can upgrade from v8 of the home edition to v9 of the home edition.  Do you have v8 of the Home Edition installed?  Maybe the 'About' mentions 8.0.xxC (ends with a C)?

  • Hello,

    Thank you for your info.

Actually, I downloaded the 8.0 form SOPHOS site (May/2013)  and at that time, only 1 version (home edition) was available.

I checked the version and it is now 8.0.15.

What I remember is after I did some software update (Mac OS update) via Apple (maybe secirity update), the SophosUIServer started to appear on the menu (Left side, the next to Apple icon) and also on the DOCK. Until then, the Sophos icon was on the right side on the menu bar but it was disappeared and now always on the Dock. Anyway, I don't know what is the SophosUIServer is.

I already downloaded the 9.0 (home edition) and it seems automatically unstaffd the Zip (because I can see the icon, Sophos Anti-virus Home Edition) but no Sophos Remove on the 9.0 folder. I don't know which version I'm using right now.

Is there anyway manually remove the 8.0.15?

    Thank you.

  • Sorry again,

I checked the Version as the way you provieded the URL page suggested (open the 8.0 and click "About Sophos A-Virus).

    The, it shows as 8/0/15C.

So, this is the company edition? not Home edition?

Since the Sophos Remove does not do anything, I have to remove this version manually.

    Thanks.

  • If the version ends with a ‘‘‘‘C’’’’ it’’’’s the home edition (‘‘‘‘consumer’’’’).

As you have the home edition of 8 and want to install the home edition of 9 you should be able to run the v9 installer and it’’’’ll overwrite the current v8 install. However you say that when you run the ‘‘‘‘Sophos Remove application (from the Applications folder) nothing happens?

Reboot the Mac (shutdown/switch on) then:

    1. Run the ‘‘‘‘Sophos Remove’’’’ from the Application folder. What exactly happens? If it fails…
    2. Run the v9 installer. What exactly happens there? Screenshot any errors etc. If that fails…
    3. See the post below. Download the v8 uninstaller from that thread and see if it has more success - the video in the thread explains how to use the file. Note: You may have to move the current ‘‘‘‘Sophos Remove’’’’ app out of the Applications folder before you can move the downloaded one in (i.e., best to keep a back copy of the original file rather than just delete it).

  • Thank you for your help.

Finally, I could remove the 8.0.

Since the Remove icon in the application did not response anything , I browsed this FreeTalk site and somebody suggested as Go to Library>Sophos. Then, find Remove Package, click and go as directed. I tried it and Successly Uninstalled.

Then, I installed the 9.06 (the most recent one I believe) and scanned my Mac.

Now, I have new question. The result shows as "Issues detected" & "No treats Found". This gives confusion.

If no treats were found, then why it tells "Issues detected"? (Sorry, I should post this question as a new posting?)

    Thanks again.

Yes, to keep the forum readable a different questions shouldn't be put on the end of the original as a future reader will get confused.
