Sophos Menu Bar icon not displayed in Mountain Lion DP 3

Just a note to those testing Mountain Lion, the Sophos Menu Bar icon does not display after the computer is restarted. Launching the application seems to indicate that the service is running, but it doesn't appear in Activity Monitor.

Yes, I've configured Security in SystemPrefs to allow any software to be installed, not the ones that comply with the new gatekeeper function.

Anyone else testing ML experiencing this issue? I e-mailed Sophos Support to have them report this to Engineering, but they just pointed me to this forum, so I'm not sure that anyone who can actually fix this has been alerted.

So, is this just a permissions problem?

if so, is there a terminal command we can run to fix the permissions issue that does *not* involve uninstalling/reinstalling anything after upgrading from 10.7.4 to 10.8?

It's not just a permissions issue; there is a bug filed on the item as well.  However, it appears that for some people, there's a permissions issue as well -- fixing permissions is done via the Disk Utility.app software "Repair Permissions" button.  It can also be done from the command line using

    diskutil repairPermissions /

  • So if there's a known bug that has been filed for this issue, and ML has been in DP stage for months prior to launch, why hasn't Sophos addressed this already?

It seems sad that a simple glitch like this has been left to collect dust as long as it has...

  • I am also experiencing loss of sophosuiserver (menubar icon) after it tries to update.  I am using 8.06c on freshly installed mountain lion on my 2011 macbook pro 13inch.  Common and release a fix already, this is disgusting.  Also sometimes the on-access scanner get disabled but for unknown reasons.

  • I found these entries in console logs and had noticed that during this time the icon had disappeared:

  • I seem to have solved the disappearing menu bar icon problem by uninstalling Sophos and Spotlight searching all System files for "Sophos", which turned up more folders and files. I trashed all of those, rebooted and reinstalled the latest 8.0.6C. The icon is now persistent through rebooting and sleeping.

  • Hi smithmm,

You mention the exact same process I took in attempting to correct the icon issue, and that it is now persistent during reboot and sleep... Did you manually have to add SophosUIServer as a Login item, and what about when Sophos performs an update? Does the icon vanish or remain?

    Cheers

  • I had the same problem after upgrading to Mountain Lion & the current version of Sophos AV. I noticed that selecting 'Show Status in Menu Bar' had no effect & no check mark appeared against that option.

I simply uninstalled Sophos AV using the 'Remove Sophos' utility & then reinstalled it (without searching for any left over files) & it now seems to be okay, with a check mark appearing against the 'Show Status...' option.

Already mentioned in another thread: SIMBL is incompatible with OS X 10.8, and should be removed.  Search on here for SIMBL for instructions on how to manually remove it.  Not sure if this will fix your problem with SAV, but it may, seeing as SIMBL injects itself into all running processes.

[The following could be more misleading than helpful]

The other issue in that log is "tried to be brought forward, but isn't in fPermittedFrontASNs" -- searched on Google, and this seems to be affecting a number of popular pieces of software, but I haven't seen a description yet on what causes this/how to fix.  The only ASN I know of that would show up in this area is ASN.1, which is a data structure used in structured authentication records (SSL, SNMP, etc.).

Maybe try disabling Live Protection and see if that fixes the error?  Other than that, it could be a failure to make a secure connection to the update server (although that should throw its own self-explanatory error).

  • Thanks for the reply. I've just unistalled and reinstalled to see if that cures it. Had to do the same with Mountain Lion as that upgrade caused me more headaches than I care for, but it did cure my ML problems so I'm hoping this will do the same.

  • Greetings from Sunny Spain 8)

I upgraded from SL to ML.

At first boot up, the s shield did not appear in my bar. I checked to see if the antivirus app was still working, it seemed so, but I just kept track of it (several things went wrong with the OSX upgrade, but all were minor annoyances).

Then I switched users, and it appeared. I went back to my account, and it showed there.

I thought it was a case of self healing software 8)... till today.

I now have TWO instances in the bar.

     6473 ??         0:04.14 /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosAutoUpdate.app/Contents/MacOS/SophosAutoUpdate -d
     6827 ??         0:54.47 /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/InterCheck.app/Contents/MacOS/InterCheck -d
     6834 ??         0:03.98 /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosAntiVirus.app/Contents/MacOS/SophosAntiVirus -d
     7241 ??         0:03.71 /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosUIServer.app/Contents/MacOS/SophosUIServer
     7251 ??         0:07.03 /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosUIServer.app/Contents/MacOS/SophosUIServer -psn_0_4199425

I won't install and unisntall and reinstall because it looks like something crazy that resolves itself just pressing cmd+shift+Q and reentering. But is annoying. Need to be polished.
