Sophos Menu Bar icon not displayed in Mountain Lion DP 3

Just a note to those testing Mountain Lion, the Sophos Menu Bar icon does not display after the computer is restarted. Launching the application seems to indicate that the service is running, but it doesn't appear in Activity Monitor.

Yes, I've configured Security in SystemPrefs to allow any software to be installed, not the ones that comply with the new gatekeeper function.

Anyone else testing ML experiencing this issue? I e-mailed Sophos Support to have them report this to Engineering, but they just pointed me to this forum, so I'm not sure that anyone who can actually fix this has been alerted.

  • Engineering do read this forum, although most don't post here; I do know that they test the product on MLDP3, so they are likely aware of the issue if it is pandemic.

Are you currently running SAV 8.0.3?

  • This problem is not unique to ML, and there are several threads about it here.

The little black menubar shield is put there by the SophosUIServer app which is located in the MacIntosh HD/Library/SophosAnti-Virus/folder.

As a workaround you can put the app from that folder in the dock, and when it stops showing in the menubar simply click on the dock icon and it will reappear in the menubar.

As far as I can tell the SophosUIserver app is just that....provides a User Interface via the menubar, and whether it is running or not has no effect on the all the other Sophos elements.

Mine seems to disappear after an update (have actually seen it fail to reappear after an update, even just a definition update) but not every time.

  • I just performed a clean-install of ML on my early 2011 MBP 13 i7, and can confirm the "vanishing menu icon" issue, and have a better idea as to the cause...

During installation of Sophos, it fails to create the required  "SophosUIserver" app entry under System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> [default user account] -> Login Items. As a result, as soon as you reboot your MBP, the icon will not re-appear. I can go in and manually create the needed entry, and afterwards it will show on startup, but will again vanish after even the smallest update, and will not re-appear unless I manually re-start the SophosUIserver process.

Although it doesn't appear to impeed the functionality of Sophos, it's irritating that this wasn't caught / fixed during the DP of ML. I'm currently running Sophos for Mac Home Edition 8.0.6C.

Please try to push out a fix for this as soon as possible.

    Thank you.

  • Well in my case the log-in entry did not disappear after ML update. However after a few hours or so it does vanish from the menubar. I am now thinking it goes away after sleep. But I am not 100 percent sure of that.

However I see intercheck active in the activity window so I presume Sophos is working somewhere in the background. So it is not the DP3 I am working with it is the final release of Mountain Lion.

Mine disppears after an update, not every time, but pretty sure it is related. The sophos UIServer app is in my login items.

I just keep the sophosUIserver app in the dock so it is only a moment to restart it, though as someone said its only function is to put the badge in the menubar...everything else works without it, including updates.

  • Am I glad that I joined this forum and found this thread of messages.

Now that I know that this is a common occurrence and that my MacBook is still protected that is one less thing to worry about.

I thought that it had something to do with upgrading to Mountain Lion as before then everything was OK and visible.

I'm not sure I know at what point the shield icon disappears from the menubar, just that after a cold start or restart it is there and that some time thereafter it just disappears. I've not yet actually seen it disappear.

Many thanks to everyone in this thread for the confirmation and additional thanks to those who provided the information on how to quickly restore it.

  • Hi I'm on 8.0.6c and did a fresh install of mountain lion.  The ui.app was not in the startup items list.  ALso maybe its needs a startup daemon or something, like with lingon you can specify that it should keep open all the time.

  • It should not be in the startup items list by default; it is loaded by Sophos itself.  That said, you should be able to create a LaunchAgents plist with a KeepAlive entry (USERS AGENTS entry of com.sophos.savmenu or similar, keep running all the time if using Lingon) as a hack; this may not play well with future updates however, and is not supported.

  • So, is this just a permissions problem?

if so, is there a terminal command we can run to fix the permissions issue that does *not* involve uninstalling/reinstalling anything after upgrading from 10.7.4 to 10.8?
