Sophos Menu Bar icon not displayed in Mountain Lion DP 3

Just a note to those testing Mountain Lion, the Sophos Menu Bar icon does not display after the computer is restarted. Launching the application seems to indicate that the service is running, but it doesn't appear in Activity Monitor.

Yes, I've configured Security in SystemPrefs to allow any software to be installed, not the ones that comply with the new gatekeeper function.

Anyone else testing ML experiencing this issue? I e-mailed Sophos Support to have them report this to Engineering, but they just pointed me to this forum, so I'm not sure that anyone who can actually fix this has been alerted.

  • I have this too, I just saw it - I have two instances in the menubar. Unchecking the show status icon makes them both disappear and checking it brings them both back.

  • Hey everyone,

There have been some reports of two shields. I'd be interested to know if you have more than one user logged in, and whether you have a Login Item for the Sophos UI Server set (in 10.7 and 10.8 you shouldn't). Check for Login Items in System Preferences, Users & Groups, Login Items.

  • I have unchecked 'SophosUIServer (All Users)' from the Login Items of Users & Groups

Then I rebooted the iMac (2011 i5) and now i only see a single Sophos icon in the Menu Bar.

But apart from seeing double icons of Sophos, i thought the antivirus was also responsible for a stall in the bootup.

I noticed this in OS X Lion (10.7.4) itself but only when i rebooted.

The bootup process stalls after showing the mouse pointer in the top-left corner.

The pointer can be moved but i only see a blank grey screen for atleast 20secs.

After which the desktop appears but in the menu bar i see only the two default icons: wifi and bluetooth.

Then after another 20secs, all the other icons instantly appear.

So although performing the Sophos fix has improved the above, it hasnt completely solved it.

I was wondering if anyone else is facing this stalling problem and whether its related to Sophos itself?

    OK.

When the "second s shield" appeared on the bar, there was only one user logged in.

Login items in System Preferences: I do have a SophosUIServer there (as I said, I was upgrading from Snow Leopard directly). While I was checking it, and preparing to remove it from the list of login items... one of the s shield bar icon dissapeared!

I will check it forward and report. 8)

    OK

I logged  out and logged in as the second user and the second icon appeared again.

I've removed from the log in list SophosUIServer, and now it just shows one icon in the bar.

    Hi there,

Firstly, thank you for fixing this problem and contacting us directly.

I had the same two Icon problem on both my Macs which was fixed by removing the Login Item. On my NaacBook Pro & iMac I had done full uninstalls & reinstalls while trying to fix the disappearing Icon problem. This of course after upgrading to ML. I wonder why the entry was still there then? Should the uninstalls not got rid of it? I fear many people doing upgrades & using Sophos might not make it to these Message Boards to find the fix!

  • Try disabling Live Protection, as this issue sounds like it's related to network connection delays.  Does disabling Live Protection resolve the startup stall?

  • I'm was the issue of two Sophos menu-bar items in 10.7.4, simply after rebooting.

I just wrote-up the fix for this here:
