Sophos Menu Bar icon not displayed in Mountain Lion DP 3

Just a note to those testing Mountain Lion, the Sophos Menu Bar icon does not display after the computer is restarted. Launching the application seems to indicate that the service is running, but it doesn't appear in Activity Monitor.

Yes, I've configured Security in SystemPrefs to allow any software to be installed, not the ones that comply with the new gatekeeper function.

Anyone else testing ML experiencing this issue? I e-mailed Sophos Support to have them report this to Engineering, but they just pointed me to this forum, so I'm not sure that anyone who can actually fix this has been alerted.

  • Hi LDMartin1959,

There have been some reports of two shields. I'd be interested to know if you have more than one user logged in, and whether you have a Login Item for the Sophos UI Server set (in 10.7 and 10.8 you shouldn't). Check for Login Items in System Preferences, Users & Groups, Login Items.

If you do have a SophosUIServer in your LoginItems list, delete it and log out then log in again. Should be down to a single shield.

  • Hi RTP,

Indeed the software should be removing the unnecessary Login Item, but it seems that its not doing its job (at least not consistently). Working to get to the bottom of it.

  • Can you clarify that last statement?

For 10.8 users -- using Sophos 8.0.x -- there should be *no* SophosUIServer (All Users) listed in any Login Items list?

What about for 10.7 users?   Or users with Sophos 7.3.12 still installed?

I do not have the double-shield issue, but I *do* have "SophosUIServer (All Users) in my login items on my 10.8 system (which was upgraded from 10.7).

  • The link is working, but I am surprised if this proposed fix actually does work.

I also had two Sophos shield icons in my Finder menubar under Mountain Lion, because there were two instances of Sophos UI Server running.

The second instance was created by a Login Item for my user account, which I deleted as suggested by other users posting in this topic. Note that you have to unlock the Login Items preference pane, and remove the problem item from the list with the [ - ] button. The checkbox to the left of an item in the list has nothing to do with enabling/disabling it.

The preferences file at <~/Library/Preferences/com.sophos.ui.plist> is unchanged by this action. By a reading of its contents, that plist file does not appear to have anything to say about launching a duplicate UI Server process.
