Video on Demand pixelates with ASG but with Actiontec

I've got FiOS internet and TV. When watching video on demand (VOD) it will pixelate and some times the sound will cut out.
A little background.
I had ASG 8.003 installed on the hardware in my sig. Speed tests show a solid 30Mbits up and down. But I would get pixelation when watching VOD. No other internet activity was going on at the moment. No big down loads or anything like that. I had Verizon send a tech out. He was open minded and didn't just assume it was my ASG causing the pixelation. He tried several things. The last was to switch me back to the Axtiontec rev F router. Pixelation was fixed.
My ASG wasn't running IPS or TCP syn or UDP flood protection. I checked the cards for dropped packets (ifconfig eth0) etc. Showed no dropped packets or other problems.

Has anyone else had things like this happen while watching VOD?

    it's FIOS.  do a search for fios on the forums. I guraentee you Astaro can EASILY do 19 megabits especially with that hardware.  It's either a bad cable, bad nics..FIOS acting up..etc etc.  FIOS is a fiber-coax hybrid running PPPOE.  do you have ethernet or coax coming into the actiontec?

    in the FIOS FAQ thread you' and others mention with triple play there's all kinds of issues with the actiontec and things.  Your speedtest even showed you are getting nothing more than 10 down when you try to bypass the actiontec.  since you are trying to pull more than that..yes you're going to pixelate..badly.   that's a FIOS issue...your best bet is to DMZ the ASL so all non-used ports automatically get forwarded to the ASL.  I would run the ASL in bridge mode after that.  The FIOS FAQ thread talks about setting up the DMZ as well:

    I have Ethernet (cat5e) going from the ONT to the Actiontec. I've tried using the MoCA bridge in the actiontec and a NIM100. Both with pixelation. So it's not the NIM100 MoCA bridge. I've changed the Coax going from the Moca bridge to the Coax splitter and changed the coax splitter. The Coax is RG6. I'll see if I can find some other NICs lying around to try. I've changed/reconfigured the entire netowrk surrounding the Actiontec and ASG. With ASG=Pixelation, With Actiontec=no pixelation.

    it's not ASG.  Many more folks have it working with FIOS.  ASG EASILY does 30 megabits with everything turned on with your class of hardware(p-4 not the via) and 10 users.

    Damn this is frustrating. I KNOW ASG can do it! That's what's so frustrating. ASG on a P4 should smoke that Actiontec in every way. Hell, on a P3 it should do it. Normally it's just me and the kids on the internet. The biggest demand is doing VOD.

    A few more things to try.
    1. Connect the Coax to the Actiontec via the NIM100 & Cat5 (tests the NIM100, Coax jumper, and the Cat5e cable).
    2. Try a different software install to see if that has any effect.
    3. Try some new NICs. What are some good 10/100 or 10/100/1000 cards? I'm using older Intel 82557s I believe.
    I know there are several supported NICs, but what ones offload TCP/IP from the CPU. What would YOU buy?

    If video on demand works using the actiontec only then I believe that FIOS is working correctly. The actiontec is much less powerful than your ASG. If VOD starts to pixelate with the ASG first and the actiontec configured as a ethernet moca bridge only (firewall off passing all traffic), then something with the ASG is the likely cause. The NIM100 could be used as an alternative to the actiontec.  The particular issue can be either hardware or configuration. I would review the amount of RAM. Secondly utilization of the P4 with 2gb of ram is a wise choice. For testing you may want to use only two NICs, WAN, LAN and eliminating the DMZ. ASG configuration may also be an issue. While I realize you have the IPS disabled are you using virus scanning? The actual cause may be difficult to find. However start out with the absolute minimum services running on the ASG and build from there. One possibly is to try VOD with a packet filter rule allowing all traffic to pass. If VOD works disable the rule and try again with all packet filters in place. Verify logging is enabled for all filtering. The logs will help you to solve the issue. Simplicity is the key. As components are added at some point VOD will pixelate pointing out the cause. Also you have the right coax in place. RG6 is the recommended coax for FIOS.

    The P4 I'm using only has 1GB of RAM. It shows 27% used. The CPU never went above a few percent.
    I just reinstalled ASG 8.102 on the P4 and do not have any proxies, IPS, virus scanning, etc running. I allow ALL traffic from the Set top boxes out. They shouldn't need any inbound ports for VOD.

    Just a little while ago, I disconnected the Coax from the Actiontec and plugged it into the NIM100, then the Cat5e from the NIM100 to a 10/100 ethernet switch, then from that to one of the LAN ports on the Actiontec. Exactly duplicating the STB-to-firewall path that exists when I have ASG in place. Wife and kids are watching VOD right now and there is no pixelation. Looks like the NIM100, cat5, and switch are all working just fine. Going to keep an aye on it for a while. But after only a half hour with ASG in place last night, I had already seen pixelation. So I have 2 things left to try. Different firewall software and new NICs. New software is free, so I'll try that first. I'll be trying out ClearOS 5.2 and maybe IpCop (although it isn't maintained any more).

    it's not the ASG...there's some configuration or something somewhere it isn't liking.  It may simply not work in your environment..that happens to any software.  if ASg not working with FIOS was a large issue..these forums would explode..they aren't..so it's isolated to your setup.

    I'm testing the P3-1GHz machine (has ASG 8.003 before) running IPCop between the STBs & NIM100 and the LAN port of the Actiontec. So far, no pixelation. If it continues to work, I'm going to substitute the ASG in place of the IPCop. To compare the 2 in the same environment.

    I don't see what's so special about my environment. FiOS ethernet to ASG. ASG-LAN1 to 10.10.100.0 subnet, ASG-LAN2 to 10.10.200.0 subnet (Has STBs). No IPS, Proxies, etc, etc. Maybe it is a NIC issue. We'll see. IF ASG doesn't pixelate, I'll try them both connected directly to the ONT again.
    It may be a configuration of ASG that isn't behaving well with FiOS. It's just that I've tried every configuration that has been suggested to me and it still pixelates. Maybe IPCop will pixelate when connected directly to the ONT. I still have a little testing left to do.

    Oh. What NICs do you like for ASG? I've been looking at Intels, but am open to other Mfgs. I don't need Gbit, since none of my switches, etc are Gbit capable. But if I can find a deal on some older good performing NICs I'll do it.
