Video on Demand pixelates with ASG but with Actiontec

Also what do the reporting graphs show for memory use?

I would look at memory usage first off, I think you need at least 1gb of ram to run v8.*** reliably.

The ASG box I was using had 512MB of RAM. It's the one detailed in my signature. The daily, weekly, reports always show CPU and RAM nice and steady. CPU is usually under 10% unless I'm doing something in the interface, etc. The RAM is almost always under 40%. Never over 80% even when changing configurations or generating reports, etc. There never seems to be any hardware graph disturbances during use of VOD. 
Network usage shows ~14MB during HD VOD usage.
I have a dedicated interface for VOD use and have that interface MASQ'd to the external interface and have a packet filter rule allowing all outbound traffic from the VOD interface to the internet.
No IPS, No VPNs operating at the time, I have the web proxy running, but only for a single machine running on another interface (that machine is used rarely). No traffic shaping, no QoS, UDP & TCP Flood protection shut off.
Is there anything specific you're looking for?

Just to eliminate the possibility of bad hardware, I built another machine (P-III, 1GHz, 1GB RAM) to test it. I still had some pixelation. In that machine I'm using all Intel NICs.

There are multiple points to consider.

1. I have tested ASG v8.003 on my Jetway J7F4K1G2ES-LF w/ 1GB of RAM {which is stronger than yours on a couple points} and determined that it was not strong enough to operate "Smoothly". Point to consider.

2. VOD is a broad term, what video on demand are you using? The pixelation is generally related to the "Quality" of connection that the VOD identifies. Unfortunately, each different client works in different ways. My netlix / Tivo HD VOD = Fabulous, Netflix / PC VOD using Silverlight client = Junk, Amazon Unbox / Tivo = Great, Amazon Unbox / PC = Had to tweak.  

3. As you saw from my description above. What client is connecting to the "VOD" has a major factor to consider.

If you want a simple starting point to work from, I would start by maxing out the RAM on that C7. Then disable all IPS & Web security. Just because it isn't running for that client, doesn't mean it is not running and consuming resources.

The VOD client is the Verizon FiOS STB/DVR box itself. I'll try disabling the ASG web proxy, that's the only thing that is running that you describe. However, if that is the cause, I've just disabled one of the biggest reasons I want to use ASG over the Actiontec.

I've been reading in the Broadband forums that VOD pixelation seems to be an on-again / off-again issue anyway. I'm going to try using VOD a lot more while connected to the Actiontec and see what happens. Then I'll try using the ASG for a while with everything disabled.
The machine I've got configured right now is a P-III 1GHz with 1GB RAM. I do have another machine (P4, 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM) I could try. But I can't see that it takes THAT much horsepower to smoothly handle 15Mb if data.

I'll let you folk know after I've tested it for a while.

In general, I have found a P3 to be equal to a C7 in performance. Assuming your P4 1.8 is a socket 478+, I would try that. It would be a much better benchmark.

You shouldn't necessarily have to turn off the web proxy, but you definately have to make certain that Bypass content scanning for streaming content is enabled. AV scanning of the streaming content will have a negative impact on the video quality.  If the content is coming from a single source, you can also set exceptions for AV scanning and URL_Filter.

I am having the same issue with my FIOS setup. Network performance seems great and I am able to stream from Netflix and other sources without issue, but FIOS OnDemand programming is choppy and pixelated

I am running ASG 8.101 on an Athalon 64 4400+ based system with 4GB of ram (so plenty of HP). My FIOS is setup for an ethernet handoff, which plugs directly into my astaro. The WAN interface on the VZ Actiontec router is plugged into my lan and it is feeding the boxes via coax. So far I have port 4567 open and forwarding to the VZ router (it was the only rule I found on the thing). I have also setup an IPS exception for any traffic bound for the VZ router or any of the cable boxes. All bypass boxes are checked for the rule. 

Does anyone have any ideas?

I am in the same boat as everybody else.  FIOS VOD does not work.  I am also running an AMD 4400+ with 4GB so clearing it should handle my home usage without issue.  There does not seem to be any port blocking going on.  I would love to get this resolved.  I don't have my STBs on a seperate interface.  My STBs can get to the internet without issue.  Widgets work without issue.

The open ports are for Remote DVR functionality. They don't affect the streaming of VOD. Even after heavy pixelation, the NICs don't show that any packets have been dropped. I know I could just put my ASG after the Actiontec, but that's a workaround for some sort of shortcoming in ASG. I was suspect when it was suggested that my 1 GHz mini-itx system or a P3-1GHz were not up to the task of routing just 15Mbps. But your AMD 4400+ should be more than capable of routing even more traffic than that. It's not a horsepower issue. There's something "off" in ASG that makes it less capable than the Actiontec for streaming video.

I noticed when I disabled UDP flood protection, the issue went away.  I looked through the IPS log after starting VOD and noticed multiple IPs (depending on the title selected) communicating from source port 48879 to dest port 21310.  So now I have UDP flood protection on, with an exception using the ports above.  It is important to note that the UDP packets are not going to the IP of the STB, but to the IP of the external interface.
