Re-installing SAV 10.3

Due to my SAV not working I decided to reinstall it.

I've uninstalled the SAV from when I reinstalled the Vista OS last October.

However, there is a SAV download in 'Programmes' from Feb 26th that won't uninstall - Error 3005 SAV can only be uninstalled by members of the Sophos-Admin users group. Strange as I've done this before without a hitch.

Also when I try to re-install SAV 10.3 it fails to do so: error 0x80041f09

To me, only option is to reinstall the OS, but, prior to that any advice would be much appreciated.

  • May need to check what Sophos groups are/ are not set up on your computer and create/add your account.  See the article below.

  • Command Prompt.

I managed to get to step 4 add user acc to group. I know whoami - kimcatherall, but I did not see any command with 'john' in it.

When I try again, 'The Specified Local Group Already Exists' is displayed with my name below it C:\ Users\Kim Catherall>

I'm a tad lost with this type of situation.

The article says to replace 'john' with your own username.  If your account is called 'kimcatherall' then run:

    net localgroup sophosadministrator kimcatherall /add

The command will either complete OK (meaning your account wasn't in the group but now is), or say System error 1378, meaning your account was already in the group.  If you get something else: stop and post back a screenshot.

    Finally type:

    net localgroup sophosadministrator

...and look through the output written to screen.  You should see that your account is shown as being in the SophosAdministrator group.

Having done all that try to remove SAV again from Programs and Features.  If there is still a problem, log off and back on to the computer (or reboot) and try again.

  • Yes, I tried that but I get 'There is no such global user or group:kimcatherall'

More help from NET HELPMSG 3783

I cannot send a screenshot I won't connect to the net, I'm using another pc to communicate.

  • It sounds like 'kimcatherall' isn't your username.  What is the exact output if you run the whoami command in a command prompt?

  • You're right, it's 'Kim Catherall' I checked in the UAC

I've checked and I'm in the Sophos Admin Group - C: \Users\Kim Catherall

Still could not uninstall the programme.

Checked the settings again, now it's telling me the group doesn't exist.

    I'm getting conflicting info.

Now access is being denied, system error 5 has occurred.

Checked again and the command completed successfully C:\users\kim Catherall

I think there may be a gremlin in the system.

    Sorry for being a pain.

  • If you haven't got a Home or Starter edition of Windows it is easier to work with the computer management console (mentioned in the first half of the What To Do section of 110534) rather than the command line (explained in the second half).  However it is easier to explain what to do with the command line via the forum.

If you have confirmed your account is definitely a member of the Sophos administrator group (?) and you have tried rebooting (?) then, as mentioned at the bottom of article 110534 have a look at the follow on article...

  • I do have a Home edition iof Windows, Vista Home Basic, but I've tried the first option to no avail.

It didn't have 'Local Users and Groups'

I'm pretty sure that I'm a Sophos Admin Member, but unlike in the linked example you posted, I do not have the authority to run SAV with complete authority.

How do I send you a 'screen snapshot'

I'll connect to the net and do so if it confirms the above one way or another.
