Sophos Shield does not appear in menu bar

Hi,

I installed the free AV for Mac a few weeks ago around November 22, and it worked fine until a couple of days ago when the black shield no longer showed up in the menu bar. Since then I tried uninstalling it and re-installing a couple times but that didn't work--it would say it had installed successfully but the shield icon still wouldn't appear in the menu bar. I was wondering if anyone knows what I could do about that?

    is Show status in Menu bar (access it either from the Sophos Anti-Virus menu or ctrl-click from the dock icon or the Messaging tab in Preferences...) checked?

    Yes, those are all checked, but still no shield in the menu bar.

  • Well, you don't get the shield even when the checkmarks are there if SophosUIServer is not running (it should start when you log in). Go to /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/ you should find SophosUIServer.app in there. Click to run it - does the shield appear?

  • One of the accounts on my Mac (OS X 10.4.11) has Parental Controls turned on, with access to some applications restricted.  I noticed that the Sophos shield does not appear in the menu bar in that account.  I was concerned that this meant that this user account was not being protected in real time (on-access scanning).  Was I correct in that?

    In any case, I have now given this user permission, in Parental Controls, to open the following applications:

    /Applications/Sophos Anti-Virus

    /Library/SophosUIServer

    /Library/SophosAutoUpdate

    ("Allow Supporting Programs" is not checked)

    and now the shield does show in the menu bar.

    Could someone please tell me if I did this right?  And did I need to do it at all?  (Basically all I want to do is to protect this user; I don't think she needs access to the UI.)  Thank you.

  • This is only needed if you want that account to have access to the UI, I believe.  The Intercheck process runs in the background as another user, and is responsible for the actual protection and updating.

    It shouldn't hurt anything to grant access however, as you still need an administrator password to make significant changes.

  • I have just downloaded this software and have exactly the same problem!

    I installed did a full system scan, then restarted system

    on startup sophos opened in dock but didnt show in menu bar :s it was there before restart.

    Any ideas/solutions?

  • Well, of all the runaround on this issue, (and the link that goes to the thread that has a link that comes back here,) QC seems to get the kudos for my particular case with this issue. It wasn't my screen resolution, and it wasn't that I didn't have the "Show Status in Menu Bar" checked, or any of the others. It was that I had no idea there was supposed to be the SophosUIServer app running, and it wasn't until I found it where he said it would be, and set it running. So now the little shield is up in the menu bar. Yay!

    So why did I have to hunt this answer down even after not finding it in the knowledgebase until I finally did an external Google search for it, not a search from the search function within the knowledgebase? Frustrating!!! Glad I finally got it resolved. I hope others don't have to go through the frustration I did. Here, I'll seed the query with several possibilities for a search:

    no black shield in menu bar

    icon doesn't show up in menu bar

    no icon in menu bar

    sophos anti-virus no black shield in menu bar

    black shield doesn't work

    can't see a black shield in menu bar

    sophos antivirus no icon in menu bar
