Sophos Shield does not appear in menu bar

Hi,

I installed the free AV for Mac a few weeks ago around November 22, and it worked fine until a couple of days ago when the black shield no longer showed up in the menu bar. Since then I tried uninstalling it and re-installing a couple times but that didn't work--it would say it had installed successfully but the shield icon still wouldn't appear in the menu bar. I was wondering if anyone knows what I could do about that?

Thanks

  • Thanks for seeding the search engine on this one :)

This is a very uncommon issue, which is likely why it was so hard to find the solution.

  • Not uncommon at all if you look through the internet. My problem seems to end up with the same failure, even though the difference is that I do see a shield, but it is perm, anenently greyed out and nothing I do makes the app work at any level whatsoever. Scan always remains incomplete and when I reopen the app it tells me I;ve never run a scan on the asscoiated folder. So what to do to make it work on my MacBook Pro?

  • I happened to me too, so cannot be that "uncommon."

Restarted it by clicking on  on /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosUIServer.app. But it seems to me that the checkbox in Preferences about "Show Sophos AV in menu bar" should cause that to start automatically, so I am thinking there is something faulty about it not working.

BTW, even though I have found Sophos so far to have numerous little bugs, so far it has less serious bugs than the other products I have evaluated.

  • Ok Guys, I noticed on a previous install under lion the following was added to my Login Items, under Users and Groups under System Preferences

    /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosUIServer

I resolved this by adding the above to load on startup

    Hope this helps

  • Have found that by going to finder, selecting Go, MacHD (I have Macbookpro),Library,Sophos

then dragging the Sphos UI Server to the Dock and keeping it there

Then when the icon disappears from the task bar I click on the SophosUIiserver in the dock and it returns.

Well its awork around until its fixed.

  • I found how to fix this problem!!!

Under System Prefrences>Users and Groups>(Your Account Name)>Login Items,   Sophos UI is unchecked by default! Check it and restart.  Congratz!!! its fixed!!!!
