Anti Virus for Mac - this scan has never been completed

I have downloaded the Sophos anti virus software for the mac. My operating system is OSX 10.4.11. I followed the download instructions and then scanned "local drives" as instructed however the scan is never completed and the message keeps coming up "This scan has never been completed"!

I have read the threads on this online forum to try and resolve the problem but you need to be a computer expert to understand the language being used, and I haven't found this to be helpful. Can anyone explain to me in plain English what the problem might be and how it can be resolved?

thank you

  • Hi. I just updated from an older version of Sophos (8.0.1C) anti-virus and am having exactly the same issue. A long crash report is created but I don't know what it means. The crash report is headed with the following: Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000 I am going to uninstall Sophos and download it again and see if that helps. Is there anyone out there who can tell me what the crash report is saying and what to do about it?

  • That would seem to imply that a part of SAV was in contention with some part of the OS over some kernel-related activity.  This is likely file-change related.

You may wish to try adding ./DocumentRevisions-V100/ to your exclusion list for on-access scans.

You can do this by going to Sophos Anti-Virus Preferences, click On-access Scanning, and press Excluded Items.  Click the lock to authenticate, then click + to add an item.  Navigate to the root of your computer (your main hard drive name), then press command-shift-. (that's a period).  Select ".DocumentRevisions-V100" and click Open.  It will be added to your exclusion list.

  • Andrew,

I can follow your instructions until I get to "Navigate to the root of your computer (your main hard drive name), then press command-shift-. (that's a period).  Select ".DocumentRevisions-V100" and click Open."

I navigate to my boot drive but when I press "command-shift-." nothing happens but a rejecting alert sound.  Perhaps you can explain a little more about navigating to "/DocumentRevisions-V100/".

    Thanks,

    Richard

  • When in an open file dialog, command-shift-. will display hidden files.  This does not happen in Finder windows, so make sure you're in an Open dialog within the Sophos app.

  • File/folder "DocumentRevisions-V100" does not appear at root. Any other suggestions?

  • Are you running 10.7?  The issue and the fix (and DocumentRevisions) are all 10.7+.

  • No, 10.6.8. I have put the TimeMachine on the "do not scan" list. is anything else advised?

  • There are a few threads on here with suggestions for 10.6 users with similar issues; I can't think of anything other than TM volumes off-hand.

  • Same situation here, using 10.4.11 and unable to complete a scan.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Andrew, I have had the scan stalling problem on my Mac mini running 10.7.3 now. I don't think OS X 10.7.x fixed this.

I had this problem before the update, too, with 10.7.2, and the update to 10.7.3 from Software Update in Jan. didn't run well, and Apple Support gave me the *secret* link to download the patched 10.7.3 Client Combo Update in Feb. - no improvement, really. I recently upgraded to SA-V 8.0.2 from SA-V 7.10.3, (don't llet the similarity of SA-V number with OS X number confuse you), and haven't had time to see if SA-V 8.0.2 has fixed this, but will try it soon, and report then. A couple of days, maybe - it needs to be left to run overnight. In running it overnight, I first disable the Time Machine and set the Sleep mode and the Screensaver timeouts (Energy app in System Prefs) to, "Never."  But it stalls anyway. Does any one have a friendly tip for this new-to-the Mac idiot, as to where there might be another thing timing out after an hour or two? TNX.
