Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X 7.2.7c - will not update

Every time I try to update it fails.  Here are the relevant messages from the log:

com.sophos.autoupdate: Error:Could not check primary server at 16:44 on 19 May 2011

com.sophos.autoupdate: Unexpected error occurred

Any help?

  • I have the same issue. My update attempts end with "Could not contact primary server " despite the fact that its able to connect far enough to detect that updates are available "Downloading 1 of 257 files" and "Downloaded: 0.0 of 4.1 M".

I'm using version 7.2.7C with threat detection engine 3.19.1 on Mac OS X 10.6.7

I suspect that special firewall settings may have to be observed though I havent seen any documentation to that effect. Someone help us.

  • I have no firewall that is blocking outbound traffic and thus this should not be an issue...

  • I have the same problem, the automatic updates started to fail around the beginning of April 2011.

It started with the update to 4.64, which was automatically applied as expected.

After that, the sophos logfile shows entries from March 31st, although the engine is from April 4th.

This remains the same for some weeks, though the updates still worked. After the date started to be accurate again, the updates start failing constantly with exactly the same message.

I have tried to remove Sophos and reinstall from a fresh download, but this did not help either. I am running with an outdated virus protection for months now.

    Hope this is fixed soon...

  • First time here and same issue.

Mine last auto updated June 1 @ 14:30 BST since then, keep getting the same server error. I am running 7.2.c on the desktop but the laptop upgraded from 7.2.c to 7.3 last night and doers not have an issue connecting to the update server.

The latest version available to download is 7.2.c so cannot upgrade this way. I tried to raise a ticket with support but as i am using the free MAC home they pointed me here :smileysad: to get assistance.

I am wondering if it tried to auto update and got borked in the process and thats  why it wont connect?

just hope that either 7.3 comes up for download or a solution is forth coming

  • I have had the same issue for the last month. Going to scrap Sophos. Had issues with their whole drive encryption. All junk I reckon...

  • OS X 10.6.8

    Sophos AV Version 7.3.0C

    Threat detection engine: 3.20.2

    Threat data: June 6, 2011

Still no joy! I'm assuming that my virus definitions updated with the version, but the software update still logs:

com.sophos.autoupdate: Error:    Could not contact primary server at 15:24 on 29 June 2011
    com.sophos.autoupdate:     Connection timed out

Note to Sophos: I understand this is free software, but how can you possibly expect folks to buy the full versions when these problems do not even get aknowledged?
