Sophos stops working when my mac starts up

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm using a mac (10.6.8) and have the latest sophos 8.04C - every time I close down my mac and restart it the next morning Sophos stops working and wont allow me to change anything at all via preferences. If I just put my mac to sleep there's no problem at all when it wakes up and sophos continues to work.

If I download the sophos software again everything works smoothly until the next time I shut down my mac ..........!

Maybe I'm missing something - perhaps I've got one of the settings wrong, perhaps my OS wont work with the latest sophos - I just don't know!

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

  • seems to be the same issue, I don't have SIMBL installed...

  • There seem to be at least three different issues with similar symptoms; hopefully issue #3 will be fixed with 8.0.7.

  • Andrew, I don't know if anyone else mentioned it but I did notice that while the icon is in the Menu Bar at startup, after the first Update Check it disappears unless I log out and log back in. It isn't a problem with the program not running, the icon just disappears.

  • I have the same problem with v8.0.6 just upgraded, and 10.6.8 on an old MacBook Pro. . After starting, I noticed that the the Sophos shield was grey and had a cross. The preference said "the on-access scanner is off" and wouldn't let me start scanning.  So later I ran a manual update and it has come on.  I suppose it will fail again after restarting.

I don't have have SIMBL installed, or clamAV. Here is my Sophos log after starting up today:

There are two different problems; one with the program not running that has to do with incorrect permissions, and one that has to do with exactly what you are describing that requires a product update.  I'm not on the product team, and don't currently know how far through the pipeline the fix has gone (but I know it's a priority).

  • I have the same problem reported here. OSX 10.7.4, Macbook Air 2011 version. Sophos 8.0.6c.

I do not have ClamAV or SIMBL installed.

    No solution yet?

  • If you disable Live Protection, does it work?

Do you have anything different in your system log or general Sophos log that mentions Sophos?

  • Interesting.  My Mac Air has no such problem, but my daughter's Mac Pro does.  Sophos 8.0.6c & 10.7.4.  I uninstalled, then reinstalled because on-access scanning would not allow to be enabled.  After re-installing, scanning is enabled, but becomes disables after re-boot.  Checked 10x.

Tried Agile's idea to disable Live Protection... and it worked fine after re-booting 5x.  Here's one unusual thing on both items though, whether Live Protection is "on" or "off", the preferences are "locked" before re-boot, but ALWAYS reboot as "unlocked", even when the password was not entered.

Anyway, the disabling of Live Protection seemed to help.... however,

Here's a curious tidbit.  After the disabling of Live Protection worked, I enabled Live Protection and expected to experience the same problem of the scanner being disabled.... but after 3x boots, it was still enabled.  That's so weird.  So, later, I tried it again and with Live Protection enabled the scanner was again disabled.

Then, to be really confused, sometimes when the Live Protection was disabled, the scanner would also be disabled - but toggling with the Live Protection to enable it would also AUTOMATICALLY enable the scanner.  Hmmmm...

Finally, in every case, the reboot automatically changes the preferences from "locked" to "unlocked" with no password entered.

Thanks for your help Agile, it seems to be getting there slowly but surely.

  • I started this thread off in the middle of June.

Are Sophos any closer to finding a solution to this problem or are we just going to have to accept that it will not work with our machines?

First we need to isolate what the problem is you are experiencing... many people have given some excellent detail as to their issues in this thread, and the symptoms have been due to different issues for most people -- at your last post, we were looking at possible kernel extension conflicts.  After looking at those, this does not appear to be the issue.

Have any of my suggestions since your last post at the beginning of July been useful for you?
