Sophos stops working when my mac starts up

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm using a mac (10.6.8) and have the latest sophos 8.04C - every time I close down my mac and restart it the next morning Sophos stops working and wont allow me to change anything at all via preferences. If I just put my mac to sleep there's no problem at all when it wakes up and sophos continues to work.

If I download the sophos software again everything works smoothly until the next time I shut down my mac ..........!

Maybe I'm missing something - perhaps I've got one of the settings wrong, perhaps my OS wont work with the latest sophos - I just don't know!

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

  • Same here. Waiting for fix. Also had to create a new log in from my corporate oneto talk for free? Weird. Waitng on fix for v8 deployments. PITA. NOT a free customer. I am sure it will be soon though. v8 working great on 10.6.8.

    Thanks for your reply.

Onviously my problem is still ongoing - if it had been solved by any of  your comments/suggestions then you'd be the first to know about it.

If you recall I gave you a link to whre you could see a fulllist of all my extensions - you said that you were going to check them for incompatabilities. I assume that you didn''t find any?

    Thanks

    Mike

  • That's correct -- I didn't find any.

  • In that case where do I go from here?

If you've come up against a brick wall and feel that you're not going to be able to help me then just say so.

If I get some spare time, I'll dig into it further -- meanwhile, it's possible it will be fixed by the 8.0.7 release due out soon.

However, your case doesn't quite fit the profile of everyone else who has chimed in on this thread, so I feel like there's still a piece of the puzzle we're not seeing with your configuration -- and this is a bit of a brick wall.

If you create a new user and try to run it on that user, does everything work?  This will tell us for certain whether the issue is at the user level or the system level.  Thank you for putting so much effort into something that's been of very little benefit to you so far.

  • Hi

I tried your suggestion but still have the same problem.

I created a new user and restated my Mac using new user account - initially sophos shield was a greyed out S - after a few minutes a warning messga eappeared to say that Sophos wasn't working and the shield then changed to a greyed out X

  • The good news is that this now rules out the entire userspace as causing the problem... the remaining places are: network connection failing, corrupted installation, incorrect permissions or something very local to your OS configuration.

The fact that it starts up with an S and then changes to an X makes me think that the problem is with the network connection, and that SAV is failing to download updates, or is failing to connect to the Live Update server (and live updates are enabled).

Are you connecting to the internet via WiFi->router->modem?

  • On powerup and after logon receive the Sophos is not running and the On-Access scanning is diabled. Been running Sophos for Mac from day one of availabilty and never had any problems. Within preferences - on access scanning with red dot and "The on-access scanner is off" BUT the button to the right says "Stop Scanning" (WRONG Value- should say Start Scanning) and is grayed out. Unistalled using Sophos unistall, restarted reisntalled and still have problem. Running Sophos 8.0.6C on OSX 10.7.4

Please help - need to have protection.

Are you logged in using an administrator account when experiencing this problem?  Do you have Live Protection enabled?

Also, does your system log (seen via console.app) or the Sophos log provide any hints as to what might be causing this strange behaviour?

  • Yes to admin - always, Live protection - yes, Sophos log yes I see the following: fatal error: unable to configure virus detection engine Sophos Anti-Virus cannot continue
