Sophos stops working when my mac starts up

Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I'm using a mac (10.6.8) and have the latest sophos 8.04C - every time I close down my mac and restart it the next morning Sophos stops working and wont allow me to change anything at all via preferences. If I just put my mac to sleep there's no problem at all when it wakes up and sophos continues to work.

If I download the sophos software again everything works smoothly until the next time I shut down my mac ..........!

Maybe I'm missing something - perhaps I've got one of the settings wrong, perhaps my OS wont work with the latest sophos - I just don't know!

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

  • Sorry - I meant to say that the shield icon at the top of the screen is greyed out and has a X in it

  • Your OS is compatible with SAV 8.0.4, so we should check other possible issues.

First off, are you installing it via an administrator account or a user account with administrator authentication?

Second, are you *running* it via an administrator account or a user account?

Thirdly, do your log files (the SAV log and the system log primarily, found in console.app) show any warnings?

  • The account I'm using is just my computer, no others - the only autorisation I need is the password for my Mac so I assume I'm what's called a user account?

I opened up console an found something something to do with SAV upon startup - it means nothing at all to me buit hopefully it will to you - here's a snippet of what I found:

    Thanks

  • From the log, it appears that on-access scanning is failing to load correctly on startup -- something is preventing it fromintegrating with the system kernel to intercept file requests.

Do you use automatic login, or do you boot to a login prompt?

  • It's always been set to log in automatically - I've never logged in manually.

    Thanks

  • Agile - thanks for all your help so far.

Are you saying that if I log in manually each time I start the computer then the problem will not exist?

If so, how do I go about doing that ?

    Thanks

    Mike

  • I can't guarantee this will fix the problem, but it is possible that it will (as well as protect your Mac's data a bit better should it be lost/stolen/used while you're not around).

To test this out, open System Preferences -> Users & Groups and click the lock to make changes if it is locked.  Then click the Login Options line at the bottom of the user list window and set Automatic login to Off.

You can also customize exactly what you want to see at the login screen in this window and enable/disable the fast user switching menu.

I gave it a try but still no luck I'm afraid - sophos is still not working.

The only difference I could notice was that the shield was still greyed out but this time it had an S in it - however this very quickly reverted back to the greyed out shield with an X in it after a few minutes.

The snapshot of the console information that I posted easrlier must indicate what the problem might be - are there any Mac experts at Sophos that you can pass this problem on to?

    Many thanks

    Mike

  • This problem of mine isn't going to go away on it's own - surely there has to be a Mac expert at Sophos who can sort it out for me?

Sounds like I offended you - if so, I'm sorry!

Agile never responded to my post of the 16th and I know that he's normally pretty quick at these things so I simply assumed that the problem was beyond him so I was asking for additional help from within Sophos.
