Safeguard Enterprise 5.5 hangs during boot process

Hi,

I have dell E6410 with Windows 7 and Sophos Enterprise 5.5.

From time to time, safeguard hangs during boot process. I see "Sophos Safeguard is loading..." and it stays like that forever.

Pressing Shift+f3 helps.

However it is magice when it starts when it does not. I do not have USB drive connected. With docking station it boots, without it does not.

What is the problem?

  • Hi,

I have the same problem with one Dell E6410, Windows XP SP3 and SafeGuard Enterprise 5.35.3.35. I can only logon by pressing any SG's hotkey.

  • This is looking to be an issues with us. We were using the E6400's with no problem. We just got a shipment of E6410 and are now seeing this issue. Sophos hangs on the black screen... Only if I enter any of the hotkeys(display, usb it does not matter) on an undocked laptop does the Sophos program move on to the Sophos screen.

I tried automate the hotkey via the command line installation but it still hangs.

Yes we can tell the users to enter the hotkeys but they complain as normal users do and are starting to think Sophos is a pain. Need to find a solution to this soon.

  • I ran into the same issue with the system stopping at "Safeguard Enterprise is loading OS" and it would hang.

The resolution that we found for most of our systems was putting the NOATA=1 (turns on ATA compatability mode) in the deployment VBS file.

There have been a few systems, though mostly older ones, that required a BIOS update before we could get past this message.

  • So has anyone heard from support on ETA for this? Also, did you guys make sure controller settings in BIOS are set to ATA? I opened a ticket with Support as well, let's see what comes out of this.

  • I can confirm that setting controller in BIOS to ATA or updating the BIOS to A03 version made no difference. The only way to not get hung up at the first black screen is to do a Shift + F6 to toggle ATA mode. This is on e6410.

    Anyone heard anything from support?

  • Sandy,

SGN 5.50.1.6, which was a Technical Preview, is still affected by the same issue. Just wanted to let you know..
    Thanks,

    Dimitri

  • Just an FYI - this is happening on Dell 4310, 5510, 6510 and Dell 830...It appears that any hot hey will allow the user to boot in, but they must do this on every bootup...The ATA drivers being up to date does not help either....and since Dell has discontinued the 6400....all our new laptop have this issue, with over 100+ coming in daily, we need a fix for this ASAP..!

  • Hi Dimitri,

the fix was include in a build later than the one that you have! The current plan still is to have the fix included in 5.50.1

@all: Please be so kind and submit a support call in case that you encounter this issue so that we can ensure that you will receive the new version as soon as possible after release

    Regards

    Dan

  • We didn't see the problem on the Dell D830 with SGN 5.50. This works out of the box. No hot keys needed.
