ASG 220 factory reset and upgrade from V6

Hi,

I have an ASG220 and want to factory reset the device, log in and then upgrade it to a later version of the required software. The admin password is unknown and thus the reason for the reset!

When I go through the factory reset on the front panel I get ten beeps from the device. At this point it seems to hang and I am unable to access the device.

I tried logging a support ticket but was told I needed to upgrade as V6 is no longer supported.

Anyone got any ideas?

  • V6?  It's possible that you can't upgrade.  What is the serial number on the box?

  • Hi Bob,

    The serial number is: 940200164-100169

If I can't upgrade to version 8 what is the latest I can go to?

    Ta

    Nick
  • I've downloaded two V8 ISO's and tried them and they both failed. I then grabbed a version 7 and that seems to be working.

Judging by that I suspect the latest version I can use is V7.
  • And even V7 is outdated since End of 2012, so your setup is not recommended... [:(]

What do you mean by "they both failed". Any error messages?

    Private Setup:

    • XG: HPE DL20 Gen9 (Core i3-7300, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD) | XG 18.0 (Home License) with: Web Protection, Site-to-Site-VPN (IPSec, RED-Tunnel), Remote Access (SSL, HTML5)
    • UTM: 2 vCPUs, 2GB RAM, 50GB vHDD, 2 vNICs on vServer (KVM) | UTM 9.7 (Home License) with: Email Protection, Webserver Protection, RED-Tunnel (server)
  • They just hung and did nothing! nothing on the LCD and no read light on the external CD drive.

I got a read light pretty quickly on the V7 ISO.
  • Does your ASG have a VGA port?

  • Then it seems to be a very old device. You should contact your reseller for a hardware refresh.

  • The devices are about 8 years old but to my knowledge work perfectly well and have no hardware issues.

I'm just trying to get them up and running for the new owner. It seems silly to have to spend money on new hardware only to waste these.

To be honest if that is the only available option from Sophos the chances are I will go with another manufacturer.
  • Well, that's the way it goes in IT (not only Sophos)...
Devices get old, run out of support, become EOL and thus don't get any updates. I don't know other manufacturers that support such old devices (and yes, 8 years IS old for a complex electronic device)...

Don't get me wrong: You will most likely be able to configure V7, but you will neither get security updates nor receive pattern updates (for IPS, AV, etc.) or get support. I also don't know if future licenses will work on V7.
