Try changing the LBA options in the BIOS, or try a Classic or NOACPI install.
Also, make sure your BIOS is up to date.

Which version of Astaro were you trying to install?

I have changed the Hard drive settings to LBA / Normal and LBA /Auto and re-installed both times.  Still get the blank screen and Error:15 File Not Found.  Tried Classic installed as it claims that my bios does not support APIC.  However I have installed a few different firewalls and none of them had this problem.

I thought the classic was with NOACPI.  It puts the command ACPI=off in the kernel for me.  So I assume it is working.

I am trying to install ASG V7.011-071015-1.

I have even looked at ALT+F1 / F2 / F3 /F4 and it says that it cannot read some files to the drive however it writes other files.

As I have said, I have tried many different versions of linux on this drive and all work.  3 Different versions of Windows and they all work.  I have tested the HDD and the IDE Controller and all work fine.  I have checked the memory on the computer and all pass fine.

I am starting to think that I would probably be better off with IPCOP which I dont really want to use but at least it works on my computer [:(]

Have you checked the hardware compatibility list?

I'd try another PC.
Just about all my Astaro boxes are AMD chipped so I doubt that's the issue.
Do you have an older PC you can test with?

I have tried it with 2 other computers.  Again, both Acer.  The only other computer I have is my laptop.  I cant go formatting that tho.

So I guess I will just have to put up with SmoothWall and try to get all the mods installed manually.  Unless someone can tell me of any other software like astaro.

Let me start by saying I called Leo Laporte and he referred me to Astaro and started me down this path.  I just wanted a UTM solution for my home and I have bought myself a real project.  

I am a wannabe geek.  I have never done a linux install before.  This is my first.  I went and bought a $225 Compaq, with an Athlon 64 and plenty of RAM and figured I was good to go.  I ordered the install disk from Astaro so that I wouldn't screw up the ISO burn.  

It seems to install just fine, then upon reboot - blank.  I have not tried any of the other solutions mentioned because I don't know what you are all talking about.  

1) Am I in over my head? 
2) Reinstall Vista on this machine and take an old Dell or Sony and try it?
3) Try again?  What do I change? Bios? Hardware? How do I change it?

Patience and advice are greatly appreciated.  
BTW -offered to buy an Astaro appliance if they would just give me the free home license to go with it.  They said no.

Why I suggested you change display cards is that the display changes after installation.

I would have to say you are definitely doing something wrong during the installation process. I have installed ASG on about 4 different boxes ranging from high performance AMD 3500+ to lowly celeron 1100s and all went in okay.

1)Boot with CD
2) type CLASSIC then Enter
3) Follow prompts
4) Eject CD
5) CTRL ALT DEL

Now if anywhere along there I am doing something wrong then I will agree with you but how hard can it be ?

Thanks for all your help.  I have gone with ClarkConnect which doesn;t have all the features of Astaro but works.  Doesnt have the problems astaro seem to have and I managed to get a response of tech support unlike the FOB OFF i got from Astaro support.... oh wait... what support.

I got the trial version and license from them and they told me that they dont support the product unless they supplied the license... oh wait.. they DID!!!

First you say this above.

Thats another good point... It doesn't show any errors during install.  It shows untar the files to the HDD through ALT+F1 / F2 and then completes ok. Asks me to reboot.  Then when it reboots I get the errors.

Then you say this.

Now what is it. Does it show something or not.... we try to help you on here, but the saying is how can you help someone who won't even help themselves, right?

There is an HCL mentioned and available if you really want to be sure what works and what doesn't. And I mean, come on.. Acer???? Get a real system...

On the ALT F2 it showed it creating the Vol Group then creating the partitions.  Locates the drive fine, installs files.  It then says it cant run /boot/file.. Sorry I cant remember the file now... but it is saying boot is not there.

However, when I look at the hdd through druid on another distro, sees the drive and the partition layout fine.

I know acer is not that good.  I do have a HP and a home built system with Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6ghz 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD... ok its an AS-ROCK motherboard.  But it dont work on any of those either... yet Clarkconnect, Centos 5, Smoothwall, IPCOP, Monowall... they all boot and work fine.

Astaro has more features and looks better but just cant get it to work at all.

Many commercial machines have boot information on the drive and hidden partitions that can cause problems installing Linux itself and/or Linux-based systems such as Astaro. Not every Linux installer is smart enough to figure out just what is going on. Keep in mind if you have more than one drive in the box, the situation can get even more confusing.

This was true even of the Dell that I bought from Dell with "No operating system". There was a boot loader and messed up partitions. When I would install Linux, it would install with no errors and then not boot.

What worked for me with the Dell and what might work for you:

Wipe your drive that you are going to install on. You need to make a boot disk that is able to completely wipe your drive(s). Then there will be no bogus information on there that will confuse a Linux installer/bootloader.

I use the Jetico product (commercial, reasonable cost), but even something like DBAN might work well (GPL, free). You will have to try and find one that you like. There are many choices.

When you wipe the disk, just use a single pass algorithm so it doesn't take too long. The idea is to get rid of all the vendor trash on the drive, not make the drive DoD data recovery proof.

After your disk is wiped, then install Astaro. Also, if you have more than one drive, disconnect the drive you do not want Astaro to be installed on. Make sure the remaining drive is the lowest port number (SATA) and/or IDE Master drive (IDE/PATA).

Lastly, Linux can conflict with ACPI on some machines. If the above steps do not work, disable ACPI in your computer's BIOS and repeat the steps.

Let us know how it goes.

I would also like to mention that if you are not a Linux expert, it is often better to go with a known quantity off the Astaro HCL. There is a much greater likelihood it will work.

The HCL is largely about making sure there are quality drivers for your hardware. This is very important if your Linux box is going to work reliably.

The HCL is not about making sure the vendor trash is removed from the drive(s) before installing Linux.

Even with the Dell I bought (well, many Dells I have bought) there is the "vendor trash" issue. But a wipe disk boot CD takes care of this while I go and enjoy some coffee.

Another good thing to do while enjoying coffee (or some good dreams) is making sure your computer's memory is up to snuff:

Make a mestest boot CD and let it go for a few hours or ideally, overnight. See if your RAM is good.

Your Acer box does not have ECC RAM, so it is doubly important to make sure your memory does not have errors.

Most importantly, don't take it personally. Computers are more complex than ever and it takes a lot of patience to get some of them working the way you want. Just relax and take it one step at a time.

I found a free one at killdisk.com that included a bootdisk - which I copied to a usb drive -  making it easy to boot and kill with 'one pass zeros'.  If you want a more advanced method, you have to purchase.

Thanks for the advice, I hope it works.  I am going to try this and then a reinstall of Astaro.

I have now got untangle working on the same computer and it is running fine [[:)]].  Another distro that works [[:)]]  Will try the kill disc and let you know.

Well... we have now got passed the blank screen and it is booting so fingers crossed I will hear those magic 5 beeps lol.

I dont really understand why at least 4 distros worked on the same computer yet astaro was giving me problems.  I have tried a cdrom instead of a dvd rom and now it has installed.

Strange... But all the computers I had were DVD-ROMS.  So glad I had a spare CDROM lol

Say that again - this time slowly for the newbie.  I am using the Astaro CD that they sent me and placing it in a cd/dvd drive.  There is no difference, correct?  I was confused by your use of the word 'computers'.

Still getting Error 15: File Not Found - that is when it fails to boot and I try to go to the Rescue boot.  

Suggestions anyone?
