PC or server?

Hello,

I was wondering, we're having about 400 machines at work. Is it really necessary to have the 'server' installed on a real server, or would it also be possible to run it on a workstation? Those 400 pc's are never running together.

  • HI,

Are you talking about a server class operating system or server class hardware?  What OS do you have in mind and what might be the rough specs of the machine?

  • For the moment I'm running it on a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with 4gb ram. This can be increased if necessary.

  • For the moment I'm testing it on a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit system (4GB), with about 30 machines and daily about 20 online. This without any problems. At this point we're using only Linux servers. SO if we would need a server we'll need to buy also our calls.

  • HI,

The traffic going through the box is either:

    1. updating;
    2. management (RMS).

RMS will maintain 2 TCP connections per connected client.  So RMS should be ok up to 400 machines plus you say they are never typically all on at the same time.

The bigger concern would be updating.  You mention that you have Linux servers, it might be better to push a distribution point to a Linux file server you might have.  The updating traffic can then go to that to take some of the load off of the Windows machine.

  • That wouyld be very interesting. Does there exists a howto article?

  • From Enterprise Console, switch to the Update Manager view and go into the SUM configuration, you can add an additional distribution location.

Once you have the SUM writing the files to the remote file share on the Linux box you can create a new updating policy to ensure that a couple of test clients can update ok; then maybe link the new updating policy to the others or edit the current one.

The doc here is probably the closest to the info you need:
    http://www.sophos.com/sophos/docs/eng/manuals/sec_47_heng.pdf
    Section 5.1.6.

  • Fabulous, I'll look it over with our network administrator. Really great! Thanks again,

  • Still another question. When we would put it on a linux server, what would be the security settings (rwx) for the user groups?

  • Hello Jo,

as the update location is written by SUM and read by the clients you need:

    1. one account with read/write permissions - you'd then specify it in Configure update manager -> Distribution. Add the share (it has to exist already), move it to the Update to: pane and specify the credentials using Configure ....
    2. one account with read access which you would then use in the updating policy
