Pages won't load, server dropped connection

Hello,

I installed Sophos Antivirus for Mac the other night on an iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Everything seemed fine, but when my daughter, logged into her own account, tried to access the web there were numerous errors on page and then pages would not load at all; there was a message that said the server had dropped the connection.  This happened with both Safari and Firefox.  When I was logged into my account, I had no problems with either browser.

As soon as I uninstalled SAV, everything was back to normal.

What, if anything, did I do wrong?

Thanks,

Mark

p.s. This was with Version 9.

  • Do you have Parent Control enabled on your daughter's account?

Have a look at the article below if you do use Parental Control.  Following the article (even if you don't get the error shown) may help.

  • Thanks but, though I do have Parental Controls on, "Limit Applications" is not selected.

  • I can try to recreate this.  Can you tell me how the other account is set up/limited?  What restrictions are in place?

    Details:

    • Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    • SAV 9.0.5 (?)
    • Parent Controls on (require what is selected/set per tab).

You could describe the tabs under Parental Controls or screenshot if you prefer (Cmd+Shift+4+spacebar - saves picture to the desktop).  Example:

  • The only restrictions are time limits, no access from 11pm to 6am (both school nights and weekends); and block profanity from dictionary.  The only thing checked on the Apps screen is "Allow user to modify the dock"; on Web, allow unrestricted access to websites; nothing on People.

I downloaded SAV from the Sophos website less than a week ago, so I think it's the latest version.

Thanks for your attention to this!

    Best,

    Mark

  • I can't recreated this.  I haven't been able to get 10.6 installed so that's a difference.

I've tried on 10.8 (Mountain Lion), SAV 9.0.5 with web protection enabled and all the sites I tried worked fine.

This is how the Parental Controls are set up (click for larger view)...

If that looks the same as your setup, then consider things like: DNS related (OpenDNS etc.) or related to particular sites. :smileyfrustrated:

  • Okay, thank you, I appreciate your looking into this!

  • I have experienced the issue on two of my Macs. Both are running Mac OS X 10.6 and Sophos 9. On both machines I have an account for my son. It is a a non-administrator, Parental Control account. I don't have any applications or web sites limited.

Any website he tried to go to in Safari, Firefox, or Chrome was unavailable. Firefox gave the "connection reset message".

I tried limiting applications in Parental Controls and including Sophos Anti-Virus and SophosUIServer per http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/120260.aspx. When I logged on again as my son I was met with the familiar boxes asking for permission to run Sophos Anti-Virus and SophosUIServer. I clicked "Allow Always" and provide my (administrator) credentials. This worked fine for Sophos Anit-Virus. However, I found myself in an endless loop trying to grant permission for SophosUIServer. No matter how many times I clicked "Allow Always" and entered administrator credentials, the dialog requesting permission kept coming back.

My resolution was to uninstall Sophos and return my son't account to the previous state with no application limitations. I did this on both Macs and web browsing was returned to normal.

I don't have a non-administrator, non-Parental Control account on eitther Mac. If time allows, I will re-installl Sophos, create such an account and see what the results are.

    (1) How is Parental Controls configured exactly?  Is it just like  with a time limit (like 23:00-06:00), or more?

    (2) What site(s) cause a problem?

    (3) Is there any other security to protect surfing?  OpenDNS, netnanny, etc.?  Anything like that?

I'm trying to get hold of Mac OS X 10.6 to test but it's really quite old now - Mavericks is a free upgrade, but I guess older hardware specifications may limit usability.

  • Hey there,

just to note, this is not strictly an issue on the Mac. We are experiencing the same issue on our 2008 R2 Terminal Server.

The cause to the issue IS Sophos - Specifically the web filter. We are in the process of pin pointing which feature causes this, but most likely doing the following seems to have been resolving it so far (still bad that it's been 3-4 months and they haven't resolved this???)

Open Sophos, go into 'Configure anti-virus and HIPS', change 'Block access to malicious websites:' to Off

Again, it's only only resolve until they fix their bloody software...that we pay for. All I can say is, if you pay for a product, it better **bleep** well work or you will lose your customers very quickly..
