Pages won't load, server dropped connection

Hello,

I installed Sophos Antivirus for Mac the other night on an iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  Everything seemed fine, but when my daughter, logged into her own account, tried to access the web there were numerous errors on page and then pages would not load at all; there was a message that said the server had dropped the connection.  This happened with both Safari and Firefox.  When I was logged into my account, I had no problems with either browser.

As soon as I uninstalled SAV, everything was back to normal.

What, if anything, did I do wrong?

Thanks,

Mark

p.s. This was with Version 9.

  • I have experienced the issue on two of my Macs. Both are running Mac OS X 10.6 and Sophos 9. On both machines I have an account for my son. It is a a non-administrator, Parental Control account. I don't have any applications or web sites limited.

Any website he tried to go to in Safari, Firefox, or Chrome was unavailable. Firefox gave the "connection reset message".

I tried limiting applications in Parental Controls and including Sophos Anti-Virus and SophosUIServer per http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/120260.aspx. When I logged on again as my son I was met with the familiar boxes asking for permission to run Sophos Anti-Virus and SophosUIServer. I clicked "Allow Always" and provide my (administrator) credentials. This worked fine for Sophos Anit-Virus. However, I found myself in an endless loop trying to grant permission for SophosUIServer. No matter how many times I clicked "Allow Always" and entered administrator credentials, the dialog requesting permission kept coming back.

My resolution was to uninstall Sophos and return my son't account to the previous state with no application limitations. I did this on both Macs and web browsing was returned to normal.

I don't have a non-administrator, non-Parental Control account on eitther Mac. If time allows, I will re-installl Sophos, create such an account and see what the results are.
