Cannot contact server for update

**new thread at request of moderators...... Please, any support appreciated.

Hi - like many others I have had this problem, on a regular basis since first installing the home edition a month or so ago. I've tried reinstalling a couple of times, but with no success. I have got about as far as 140MB downloaded before the updater fails to contact the server.

Any further tips? Really appreciate the free nature of the software, but finding that I have no confidence in it on the basis that security software depends on being up to date.

Any help appreciated.

Tim

  • Is there anything in the update log to give a clue?  Example:

    Thoughts/ advice:

    • Uninstall and reinstall (quick and easy to see if this cures it)
    • Reboot and try again
    • Check you have enough free disk space on you main hard drive
    • Slow internet connection or cap preventing the download
    • During the update, when it hangs, open Activity Monitor and force the 'SophosAutoUpdate' process to quit and then try another update

  • SAV was running just fine for me, and had been for years until I had a hardware memory failure.  After replacing the defective memory I've not been unable to update at all.  My Sophos log shows the following, this being the latest entry:

com.sophos.autoupdate: Error:    Could not contact primary server at 17:54 on 19 May 2014
    com.sophos.autoupdate:     Server was not available

This has been going on for over a month.  I decided the application had become corrupted, so I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it from my old download file (Version 7.3.10C, Threat detection engine 3.30.0, Threat data 4.76), and tried again.  Everything installed just fine, but still no updates.  How do I solve this?

V7 won't work as it doesn't know how to contact the current servers.

You should uninstall that and then download V9...

  • Thanks for your reply ruckus!

Are you saying it was a coincidence that I had a hardware failure at the time your servers quit updating SAV for me?  Is it possible that I was running an updated version of SAV I had no knowledge of?

V9 will not run on my system, a late model Mac G5 quadcore, and I have been unable to locate the download for an older version that does function.  That would be the version which was working for me when I had the hardware failure a month ago.  My Mac is running OS 10.4.11 because that is the last version that supports the Classic environment which I use for most of my projects.  I do have an external SCSI RAID array that boots to Leopard (still wouldn't run version 9), but using that would cause me to lose my real time virus protection.

Is there a solution for me?

  • Version 8 of SAV for Mac was supported up to the end of April and as of yesterday v8 installs will update to 8.0.25 and stops there with no further updates - so there has been recent activity in version updates etc.  If the memory was replace in the last few days (can't see a date for when that problem occurred for you) then yes: the two separate things overlapped each other.

Version 9.x running on Mac OS X 10.6 or higher is the only supported combination so there isn't a solution I can provide I'm afraid.  The computer, while it may work nicely and be just what you need, is unfortunately very old (Apple doesn't support the OS for example) and hence we have stopped providing support for it too.  No matter how good an antivirus program is you also need Apple to be fixing security bugs in the operating system to be protected.
