"This Scan Has Never Been Completed"

I have an old MAC OSX 10.4.11  I just downloaded Sophos Anti-Virus Version 8.0.11C and I'm using Safari Version 4.1.3 Whenever I scan local drives it runs for a few minutes and then I get the message, "This scan has never been completed" and under that "No threats detected." No data appears on the Custom Scans window or in the Quarantine Manager so I'm not sure anything is happening. Further more the Sophos shield in the menu bar (task bar?) up top is white with a black "S" on it and I think when I first installed Sophos it indicated that this shield should be black!   I am not a computer expert so can someone please assist me in simple terms? I'd really like to know how to resolve this and what I am doing wrong. Thank you.

  • I will start a scan of my local drive and when I return I find that Sophos is not running, no window is open, and when I open Sophos again I see in the Scan Local Drive window it states that "This scan has never been run."!  Anyone have this exact problem?

  • Not sure what you mean by "a very popular question." I'd be happier to see that it was a very well answered question! LOL! I assume you mean many "views" of your post. Unfortunately, that hasn't yet produced an answer. And there are a couple of other threads about the same question, but over two years old.

I'd seen this lack of 'completion since the first install and always had assumed it was just not an implimented function in the free version. Apparently, the posts from Sophos emplotees, seem to imply that the function is supposed to work. Still, no definitive answer is provided. I suppose we should be happy to get anything! Especially for the 'price' we paid. :smileytongue:

I'll cjeck back here in a couple of days and maybe also get an emnail notice since I 'subscribed' to the thread. Have a good weekend, at least the second half! :smileyhappy:

  • @kazoo,

Have you tried creating a Custom Scan? I created a Custom scan that looked at a very small set of files (<200) which were in a specific folder, already. Of course, the scan was finished within seconds. But it did indicate the date/time that it was completed, along with the normal, 'no threats detected.'

So, this proves, to me, anyway, that that info should be getting posted. However, I also found two scan logs for today that indicated each found a suspect file. This was the only indication I received, and I had to look in Console for the log files myself; not exactly convenient. :smileytongue: The log, however, confirmed my settings asking for only a 'Log entry' when any threat was detected, so I got what I (thought) I had asked for. :smileyembarrassed:

I am now attempting to scan the whole drive after editing out a couple of folders (have already excluded the external drives). We'll see what happens...

  • Open Sophos preferences, goto AutoUpdate menu, unlock/authenticate and set update check to 2-3 hours or something similar and run scan. If it is still interrupted then increase time accordingly. Set update check back to default of 1 hour once scan is complete.

  • @xAirbusdriver,

I was being sarcastic when I typed that it was a popular question because no one was answering me! :smileymad: Then I noticed that many questions on here had gone unanswered by many users so I got a little bitter. When I first called Sophos to ask about this software even before I downloaded it I spoke to a very helpful woman who followed up with an email. The email stated  "If you need any further assistance please feel free to contact us and it will keep this case open for you." Nice, right? So when I contacted them they replied with "Technical Support for the Free Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition is only available through our website." So that was a waste of time!  FREE is GREAT! FREE that doesn't work is irritating!

Anyway enough of that nonsense. Thank you very much for taking an interest in my problem. I will try  your suggestions and post the results here. Was your whole scan successful?

  • @skeleteeth,

Thank you! I will try this!

  • Well, I deleted the app yesterday. It's simply now very informative, requiring the use of Console to view the logs instead of writing its own. Just easier to let the System do the work but certainly not user-friendly. Nor do I care for the options for handling 'threats.' Logging is the only one that doesn't do something with what have, so far, been purely corrupted files. I absolutely, positively do NOT want any app deciding to move/delete a file just because IT thinks it might be harmful. Even putting it in the "Infected" folder might result in a System crash/freeze on the next start up! I'll simply go back to ClamX AV and settle for the slightly lower 'catch' rate. Sophos may have an outstanding product for businesses and it may even be worth the price, but I don't have a business to write such expenses off. And I certainly don't expect them to take a lot of effort in designing a free app out of the goodness of their corporate heart! :smileyhappy:
