Sophos utm choice for 25users

Not all users and usage places the same demands on the UTM resources.  IPS can be a performance pain-point.

The network speeds, network design and UTM configuration/features are very important to sizing/performance considerations.  No such information was in your post.

In the eyes of the appliance, with per user licensing, each device is a user and the notification/enforcement uses a 7 day window of IP addresses used. A, hypothetical, 25 user software license in an environment with 53 (18 x 3) devices online does not sound like a good start.  Pricing for hardware devices is frequently less than similar per-user licenses.

Previously the UTM110 had a 10 user/ip limit, in 2012 this was changed to an upstream bandwidth limitation.

Pricing depends upon the features licensed. Individually licensing features is often more expensive that bundled feature pricing after the second feature.  Multiple years of licensing are commonly discounted.  Leasing/financing options may be available to help spread the expenses across the licensing (lease) term.

Recently Sophos announced new hardware (SG 2xx, 3xx and 4xx - no 1xx yet) that is touted as being 4x faster.  Some of that performance is from the "new" 9.2 software which is also touted as faster than the 9.1 series software.

So basically if I get a 25 user license it will limit me to 25 devices not 25 users 
So if each user has a PC and a phone I would require 50 cals. Correct

Correct if you buy software license.
Appliances do not count IP addresses.
There will be new model for 110/120 around July with new pricing also .
If I understand good you have around 25 users that have 3 devices but they do not use them at the same time .
So for 40 devices at the same time 120 will work very we'll include IPS.
So I think the best for you will be 120 FullGuard and not buying per IP licensing for software license.

Warren, I agree with gilipeled on the 120.  The only caveat is related to the WAN connection.  If it's over 25Mbps, I would recommend the 220.  An alternative to the 220 is a 50-IP license on a small server with a 3+GHz dual- or quad-core processor with 4GB of RAM.  The annual subscription for 50-IPs is between the 120 and the 220 costs.

I disagree with everyone here.  Start with the 20.  you will outgrow the 120 in a hurry with the number of devices you have AND the most likely given Wan speeds involved.  If you can wait a bit wait for the total protect 210.   check your pm's.

The total protect 210 with the new pricing is not a bad idea but it's Overlill for that amount of users.
The new 210 have the power of the existing 320 which if far to much for him.
You need to remember that it is only 25 users , even if they have more 2 devices  it is unlikely that they will use them in the same time in such h a way that can cause load on the UTM.
Around July Sophie's will announce the new series of the 1xx , so if he can wait it better not to run to 210 .
From my experience , and I have few 120 installed in environments of 40 users , it is working very well with all modules running.
9.2 is very well tuned and it runs great on those.

Thanks so much for all the input it is very appreciated 

I was thinking along the lines of the 220 so that i could have the extra horsepower for any growth that may happen 

I would be needing the Full Guard as i need the Proxy , caching , Wifi management , reporting , SSL VPN, and the main selling point is the QoS taht i want to use for specific 443 traffic going to axosoft for our hosted ticketing system , and our Hosted Exchange on Office 365 

so far i am really very impressed with the UTM and was suprised how quick i picked up the UTM MO , if it was up to me id go 220 with Full Guard in a heartbeat , but the man who signs the cheque's might not feel the same way 

now my biggest issue is not purchasing the hardware but the 4000$ per year renewal for full guard that they want to rape me with , in south africa its 40000 ZAR per year 

My CIO will have a field day with me and what really blows my mind is that the full guard for the 120 is 8100 ZAR around 800$   im sure im not the only one who can see my issue here

120 for 800$ per year Full Guard vs 220 for 4000$ per year full guard  for 25 users 
if i supply my own server and get the 25 CAL Full Guard it will be 1800$  per year 
but now i see from this post that's not an option as im looking at roughly 50 odd devices if people are conservative 

this is so nuts , I even have a signed PO to buy the hardware but the full guard renewal is gonna kill this entire deal  [:(]

As I told before the 120 is ideal for you .
If you can wait a bit , then new 1xx appliances stronger then the 120 today will be release in few month .
But still with the 120 that exist today it's perfect for you.

Thanks i did heed your advise and have asked my Reseller to let me have a 120 to eval , if it can run without issues then i may even go for it 

My reseller also mentioned that there were some new appliances being released , but im still waiting for some info from him

New appliances has ready released but only from 210 ( new model ) and above to 230 , 310 , 330 etc....
all of them are to much for you.
If you can afford the new 210 it's great but the pricing won't be same as 120.
