As a thumb rule, always look at QOS stream from Astaro's interface -> out of Astaro. First you should decide what you want to do, and then choose which interface to apply it to. For example, if you want to limit upload stream, then it would be like Scott said - the Wan interface. If you want to limit Download stream, then it would be The Lan interface
Well I am mot trying to limit ether. Just trying to alow the QOS to priortize packets going in both directions like a VOIP phone getting priorty over other packets and this would be a 2 way packet exchange. I set the WIN interface to Total available uplink bandwidth: 2048 kbit/sec = ISP 2 Mbps Total available downlink bandwidth: 15360 kbit/sec = ISP 15Mbps
With speed tests before truning this on I get thoses speeds but when I turn QOS on and do the same test I lose about 3 to 4 Mbps on the downlink side. The uplink speed is the same before and after turning it on so it remanes unchanged. Don't understand why I am losing this speed on the tests after enabling the QOS.
I have attached a screen shot of the settings. I have not defined any traffic selectors or bandwidth pools yet.
I have ISP with 15Mbps Download and 2 Mbps upload and before enabling QOS all the sppedtest consistly show that speed. After enabling the settings in the screenshot I drop the download speed to about 9 to 10Mbps. Even incressing the downlink setting does not seem to help. As soon as I disable the QOS speed test jump back to the avertised rates.
I have a Ooma VOIP behind the firwall at 192.168.1.66 and have not set any other settings for it yet.
1. I guess you have DSL line, so try to enable "Limit Uplink" 2. a good idea would be to leave some overhead and lower the bar in about 5%, so instead 15300, try 14600. 3. Make sure that there is nothing enable in the "Bandwidth Pools" (select "External" and see).
I made the change to 14600 ans selected "limit uplink" Still slower with the test at 9.59Mbps. Disable QOS in the interface and test again and get 16.28Mbps.
Just to make sure that the test doesn't trick you - try to download a big file. Once with and once without QOS, and check the time. Also try another test site. PS have you checked "Bandwidth Pools" ( "External" )?
I found a nice 113Meg DAT file on Mcafee to test with. Here is the timings With QOS on and settings as above file transfer is 3:26 Min and hovers at around 7Mbps With the same file and QOS off File transfer time was 1:04 Min and speed hovered around 15.5Mbps. I also tried the following Turned off this option "Download Equalizer: If enabled, Stochastic Fairness Queuing (SFQ) and Random Early Detection (RED) queuing algorithms will avoid network congestion. In case the configured downlink speed is reached, packets from the most downlink consuming stream will be dropped."
With this option turned off I get the same file download time as 1:04min and speed at about 15.5 Mbps.
It would seem that the issue is with this option. What do you think? Also to answer you other question there is no traffic selectors or bandwidth pools defined. I was going to do that step next for my Ooma device after I got this speed issue figured out. My plan for that is to define the IP address for the device and create a pool for that device to have a bandwidth guaranty of a set limit of about 1Mbps. Does that sound about right?
