I did find that hyperthreading caused some problems at various times so I have disabled it. William has posted some thoughts on the benefits or otherwise of HT.

ScottJ, you may want to try an IPS exception for the TV traffic; that should reduce the CPU usage... you could use the IP address of your set-top boxes for a Destination exclusion.

I agree with you I grunt vs very modest electric savings, the C2D wins. The box I am getting is a Lenovo 8910AMU Core 2 Duo @2.93 gig (65 watts) with 2 gb of ram installed which will be upgraded to 4gb post delivery. The PC has an intel gibabit adapter on the mother board and I ordered a second intel gigabit NIC for the PCIe slot. I will be moving the Mtron solid state hard disk to this box.

I'll create an exception for the cable boxes on the Atom, you are right that should help. I think I will  only need to create an exception for the actiontec router because the actiontec is a DHCP server for the cable boxes on a different subnet from the primary network.

Thanks for reminding me about these units. However, I recall from one of the threads that there may be upgrade issues with the CPU. I can't find it now. Do you recall if that is correct?

Never mind. I re-read the specs. No issues with upgrade. My problem is with the depth. I need something lower profile - 22" deep max. I have a nice 2u unit that I'll probably pop on if it meets the updated HCL once v8 is released. That said, it is more than twice the price and I'll need to add a NIC.

Any chance the powers that be will release the updated HCL before releasing v8? That way I could have my unit in place for the release date. I see the place holder is now up under the beta programs. How about populating that with the updated HCL?! Pretty please?

if the unit in question ins't in service i would fire it up on a bench and download the v8 beta and see if it works..[:)]

I have discovered that Astaro will not load on a Lenovo 8910AMU desktop PC. My efforts have utilized both the SMP, and Classic install from the CD. Going one step further I attempted to run PFSense from CD (no beatings please) which also will not run on this box. Windows XP runs fine. In thinking this through I have concluded that the box may be either too advanced for the versions of Linux/Unix which Astaro, and PFSense use or may be related to the 64 bit capabilities of the PC. When running the SMP install on the device the install hangs at uncompressing the kernel. Using the classic install, it runs until the country is configured then displays a message to remove the CD and restart. PFSense is not able to mount the drive. Once version 8 comes out I will try again. In the mean time I will execute plan “B” and replace my workstation which is 6 years old. The CD I used is version 7.502 and works fine on other devices. So the issue definitely is with the IBM. Will version 8 of Astaro be 64 bit compatible?

Also, if you have a PCI SATA controller lying around, you could pop that in and see if it will install with the HDD on that controller, or try running the SATA controller in different modes. (Set in the BIOS)  Sounds like it can't see the controller or the HDDs attached to it, and that's a somewhat common problem with some of the P45 and newer chipset motherboards.  

I bet v8 works well for you, I'm looking at loading it up myself as well...
