Hi, yes the Marvell NIC will probably be a problem.

Also, if this is for home use, that system is overkill and, imho, a waste of electricity.

IMHO, Atom systems currently make the best compact Astaro systems for home/soho use. See my signature below for one such system.

Yes I have an Atom 330 super micro server. However it is a 1U enclosure. The result is noise. The elimination of noise was one of the primary drivers in addition to a upgrade from the Atom that has exhibited some heat related issues, although it in an area where it is not blocked from free air flow. Dust is not an issue with the device either. Yes I can see that the Lenovo box may be over powered for home application. I take it this may be on or about the same hardware size as an ASG220. As a side note my internet connection is 35mb symetrical.

Barryg's device runs th elow power chipset. I have an Atom 330 backup ASG which runs the Intel desktop chipset and it uses more power than the one in mu sig.
I changed the Atom 330 chipset fan for a low noise version.

My main ASG runs very quietly, has plenty of power (cpu) when needed.

I believe there are one or two users here running 30mbps through Atom systems with no problems.

A noob observation to be sure - but my understanding is that the Atom builds may have a hard time keeping up under moderate load with web security tools enabled - URL Filtering/Caching, Spyware, Anitvirus, HTTPS Scanning, etc. 

I'm waiting for v.8 in anticipation of wider hardware availability. Let us know Astaro!

It took me some time to respond. When the Atom 330 works correctly it is ok..., faster than the box I had before which was a dual P3 1gb. But between the noise, locking up, shutting down, typically at the worst time possible I have elected to replace it. The Atom will be used as a test box where it does not run all of the time. Problems start after a few days on continous UP time, but the fan noise is a constant. Although any device that is superior to the Atom 330 processor will consume more electricity no question. However I am willing to trade off some efficiency for stability and less noise. Currently Astaro is configured to use HTTP proxy, antispyware, IPS, firewall, URL filtering, and filtering catagories. The Atom server has a solid state Mtron 64 gb SATA disk which will move to the new box. The Mtron is awsome, fast, runs cool(cold to the touch), makes no noise! I will not be using the Lenovo M58e listed in the link above as the NIC is problematic for Astaro. I will most likely use a box that is a Core 2 DUO with 2gb of ram or more and Intel NIC Gigabit NIC's. I know the processor is 45nm at 65 watts.

please explain what you mean by moderate loads. We are talking about home use machines here.
I have a heavily optioned up machine ASG wise using an Atom 330 with 2gb.
I replaced the onboard chipset fan because it failed, didn't like being on its side. That got rid of most of the noise. My case comes with an inbuilt power supply and a fan.

What my Atom is configured with

DNS/reverse

lots of log file recording and history

My power supply fan is also very loud. Like you I have replaced the chipset fan. In my case I think there may be a problem with the board or powersupply rather than the hard drive/software. Once it decides to start locking up or shutting down it does not matter if the hard drive is connected or not. The only way to correct it is to let the atom sit idle powered off. One thing I will note with the Atom is that when using on demand in HD the Atom is CPU utilization jumps to approx 65% or higher  with some variation dependant on the material being viewed. Cartoons typically do not require the same bandwith as a movie or sports event. While viewing on demand a large download will cause choppy video on the TV while the down load is in progress. Now add a VPN session or two with everything else and soon the atom is having trouble keeping up. I have FIOS using ethernet for my internet connection direct from the ONT. This situation is regularly encountered. So all on demand TV is handled by the Atom in addition to the program guide and cable box updates. All other TV(video) uses MOCA to the cable box direct. The actiontec router supplied by verizon is used as an ethernet to moca bridge for on demand and cable guide. So while the atom is fine for the average day to day web surfing, emailing, and downloads, a configuration like mine can push it to the limit. One thing I will say for astaro is regardless of what kind of load is put on the atom, astaro just continues to run with no issues! One of the reasons I am looking towards a somewhat larger PC is to handle the load. While I think for the most part the Atom is an awsome little server(shutting down/locking up excluded) it does have limits.

The atom 330 is doing fine with this? No noticeable lag with proxy filtering? If so, I may need to re-evaluate my needs. I have received advice that the Atom may not keep pace with this configuration. It was recommended that I base my rig around a Core2Duo.

I was leaning towards a 1.8 GHz Celeron (I have a spare in the drawer) with the future option of a Core2Duo if needed. I would like to have room to grow if needed for future releases. However, as a home user I will never exceed 6 - 8 concurrent users. I have 5 on a regular basis. Mixed WinXP, Win7, Linux, OSX, print server with a 20 / 5 mbps FiOS connection (reality of course is more like 7 / 4 mbps). 

Thoughts appreciated. I will buy my machine once v.8 is out in beta. Noise is not a concern as everything terminates in the basement. I'm eying a very reasonable 2u machine although I'd happily trade down to save a few bucks so long as it will meet the demand.

Regarding your hardware, we will soon be launching the ASG v8 beta which will add a new kernel that supports a massive amount of new devices. There is always people here who like the Atom for it's power savings. Its a capable processor for sure, and for most home users or small offices it works great. We currently look at some Atom based processors for future Astaro appliances. However if your building a home box, the price of hardware is so cheap that even a smaller C2D will wipe the floor with the Atom, and I prefer the grunt vs. the moderate power savings on my electric bill, so my vote would go for C2D hardware if you have the few extra  dollars when building the solution.
