UTM and UK modem / bridge / passthrough configuration

Hi,

I have Sky Broadband and  D-Link DSL-320B ADSL2+ Ethernet Modem - UK.

I would like to set my broadband connection to Modem only and have UTM as a router.

I tried to follow instructions in this thread with no luck. Also the hyperlink referenced there doesnt work.

I have tried PPPoE and PPPoA settings in modem, as well as Bridge Mode.
I do have login/pass from the ISP Router.

I am plugging eth0 to LAN on 192.168.0.x and modem to eth1, modem when not in bridged mode has IP of 192.168.0.x.

I understand that modem should go to eth1 and all my internal network to eth0.

Still, eth1 connection in any way i tried is in status DOWN.

Please advise what would be the best configuration to have my UTM as a Router/Gateway.

    Also vigor has predefined settings will most UK ISP (0/38 for PPPoA). The only thing that you will need to do is to get the username/password for your Sky broadband. Once you get this you will need to configure your UTM to connect via PPPoE (MTU needed to be 1492) and you will immediately get a public IP (Vigor needs no configuration as by default it will do PPPoA to PPPoE pass through)

    Hi Antakar

    The tutorial is for vigor 120 modem and not for D-Link DSL-320B.Therefore some of the settings will not match. I have also updated the hyperlink on the tutorial page

    Lan port of D-link should go to the external interface of your UTM.DSL should be to the telephone line

    It seems that D-link is easy to configure in the sense that you just specify the country and ISP provider and it will automatically populate the VPI/VCI. If not then for Sky broadband the settings are (PPPoA):

    The VCI and VPI will not be set on the UTM. They will be set on your D-link as this is the one acting as a modem

    It looks like ive been doing everything correctly.

    PPPoA with D-Link works just fine - i do have internt connection.

    When i set it into bridged mode, and plug it to the WAN port of UTM, and provide login/pass -i dont get IP, and in general link status for that eth port is DOWN.

    I started my initial configuration with factory reset of UTM 120.

    So not sure whats going on. 

    Why cant i get internet connection?

    I tried with Buffalo WBMR-G300N Modem/Router with Bridge Only mode - same effect.

    I have checked Buffalo's logs, and it looks like there is no communication going on between Astaro and Baffalo.

    What am i doing wrong?

    Do i need a cross over cable between UTM and a modem?

    I tried with third modem/router - Linksys ag241v2

    It didnt work. I have checked modems logs - nothing there. Not a sign of something trying to communicate. I am not sure how verbose are logs though.

    I have vanilla UTM - i made factory reset.
    Used a Wizard to configure the network.
    Said that eth1 is WAN and its connectiong over PPPoE.

    Later provided ISP's login/pass.

    Am i missing something? Where can i find simplest steps on what should i do to have UTM working as a router with ADSL modem connected to GW over ethernet?

    I have tried wingman's instructions but no luck with that.

    Please advise.

    I have a UTM 9
    The DSL modem from ATT works and I can browse the net with a computer and it assigns the external address to my system.
    The UTM will not connect.  I set the WAN interface  (eth1) to DHCP and it does not get an IP the way my laptop does.  The UTM works fine in my home, but not with ATT DSL at my clients.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Have you tried clicking the renew button for the interface?  How about a reboot?  Some DSL require that the interface be setup as PPPOA/PPTP or PPPOE, depending on what the ISP uses.  Last time I had DSL (Verizon, formerly GTE North...now Frontier), they had some sort of system in place where Devices that got a WAN address from them had to be registered by MAC and once a system got a WAN IP, another couldn't for several hours or I had to call them up to clear a DHCP record.  Major pain.  These are some of the DSL pain points I've run into.  You may want to give AT&T a call and see if any of these apply.

    Hi, and welcome to the User BB!

    Another trick you might try is to get the MAC address of the computer that was attached directly and then, on the 'Interfaces' 'Hardware' tab, give that to the External NIC as its 'Virtual MAC'.  Then apply Scott's recommended reboot of the UTM just in case.  That might save you a frustrating call with AT&T tech support.
