Slow Internet access

Hi

We have a Astaro Security Gateway V8 - Model: ASG220 with firmware: 8.305

Right now the CPU is at 15 %, RAM:57% of 2 GB, Swap:20% of 1 GB, Log Disk 6% and Data disk: 14% of 55,4 GB.

The last week there have been several complaints from users that they have slow Internet access. Pages are timed out etc. 

Read about in a thread here that one had the same issue and the result was to disable the web cache. Cant find that in the admin console of Astaro.

We are just 60 users, with a good Internet line (not quite sure how big) but speedtest.net shows 191 ms in ping, 323 MB down and 28 MB up.

Does the Astaro gurus in here have any good pointers what I can check out? Tip of the week [;)]

    Those online speedtests don't work with a caching proxy that does URL fitlering and AV scanning.

    Timeouts can happen even without a new device in between people and the internet.
     Not that I question the complainants, but precise time and website would be helpful.  You could have a configuration issue or a hardware issue with your ISP's modem.  It's hard to say.

     In most installations, I'm not a fan of using Proxy caching - you can configure that at the bottom of the 'Advanced' tab.

    Hi Bob, and thanx for the reply

    Thought so, but I didnt have any other test about our line [:)]

    Maby send a mail too our ISP and see if they have any trouble. 

    Not sure if we are using Proxy (forgot to say that) Is that located under the Network Secuirty - Advanced - Generic Proxy? If so -then answer is no - we dont use Proxy.

    I assumed from the 323MB download speed that you were using Web Security with caching enabled, but maybe that test was fooled by your browser's local cache.  Unless you also got a new ISP when you got the ASG, I doubt that there's anything the ISP can do.

    You could check DNS Best Practice against your configuration to confirm that you aren't having an issue with DNS, but I would expect that everyone would complain if that were the problem.

    Has the internet access always been slow or did it just start being a problem?

    No, the Internet access has never been slow. It`s just the past few weeks some have complained that it has.

    We have not changed our ISP or ASG - it`s the same one.

    Gonna read up about the DNS best practice - just to see if there is any issue with our DNS. But like you said - if there has been a problem for all - I would have got a lot more complaints. 

    Is there any way to clear the caching - and would that help?

    I would find a way to bypass the astaro unit, to test throughput, before making any changes in order to rule out any other issues.

    The hint with DNS is surely a good point to start. You also may follow the link in my signature to the tweaking guide section [:$])

    Probably also installing the 8.306 up2date may help, as there are - beside of further fixes and optimizations - some (smaller) fixes in the HTTP proxy too. 

    If your line is really that fast, disabling caching completely in the advanced section of the proxy may be a solution, as caching sometimes also may act counterproductive like a handbrake, if disk subsystem has lot of I/O anyway, and Internet Uplink is lightning fast and heavily used...

    Going to look into it - but am not sure if we are using Proxy
