New home user licensing more limited on V7..

And still no power users license... its been a good last 4 years, but now I must bow out...

Well, I read the release notes, and it looks like 10 user/10 ip addresses, with 1000 concurrent connections... however, it looks like they can shut down connections when it goes above %110 of usage on the 1000 user license now, and I am wondering if this will also happen with the 10 user license....

"Home-Use Licenses 
We will continue offering a Home-Use package. The new V7 package will be free of charge and will now include the base license, all subscriptions and Astaro Up2Date. But it will be limited to 10 IPs/10 Users, and 1000 concurrent connections.  
Note: Astaro will provide no support to home users and they need to agree to participate in Astaro’s Threat Research Network."

and this from the 1000 user section...

Within ASG software the limits for maximum IPs / users are now enforced in the following 
way: 
• The administrator will get an email notification if the IP limit is reached. 
• At that time new IPs / users will still be accepted up to a maximum of 110% 
of the licensed number of IPs (grace limit) 
• If the grace limit is reached no more IPs / users will be accepted

    Per Gert:

    This means free Anti-Virus, free Anti-Spam, free URL-Filter, ... etc.

    And only 1000 concurrent connections where v6 is 32,000, lost on this?
    I am okay with 10 ip's, but connections?
    Maybe I am just misunderstanding this.

    First off, I think V7 looks great, and I love what it does. My problem is, it does a bit too much.  It supposedly only counts IP's going thru, but I am out, and it is all my servers, with no auto updates, or any other reason to access the internet, who have used up ALL of my 10 slots, plus the one free one.

    This posting has some good info, and I am actively looking for a replacement for Astaro.  I hate to do this, but I have no choice, not if I want to maintain peace in the family.

    FYI, I am an IT Consultant, but I do not run any business from home. I do a lot of testing, evaluating, and build a lot of things to learn how they work, and the 10 IP license just does not cut it.

    I do have one question for the folks from Astaro.  I am curious as to how the licensing you use fits into the GPL?

    V7 has changed the way IPs are counted, it appears to count anything that it has an address for, excluding the interfaces (changed under v7.001)

    If you don't have a need for the devices to go through or talk to the firewall give them fixed addresses. I know this is not always a good solution or put your toys behind a nat routed box so only the one IP address is counted. The only catch is the reduced concurrent connection count, but if the boxes aren't talking to the firewall that won't be an issue either.

    Don't get me wrong, I think the new way of counting IP addresses is not fair or good, but it is Astaro's bat and ball.

    I preferred the previous licences where I paid for the security features I needed.

    RFCat_vk, agree with statements above.

    It is a pain though this new licensing.  We have many devices that do not need any external access.
    (Like the four Wireless Access Points scattered around our office, each of these have a IP.  Dumb print servers, dialin server devices etc etc.)

    It should be like the old way, IP's *traversing* the firewall.

    However, it is Astaro's decision.

    This and the new HTTP proxy licensing issue are making me re-evaluate my use of Astaro in our organisation however.

    I just ran into this issue finally...

    Seems the firewall counts everything:
    My notebook's IP's (wireless and wired)
    The IP assigned to my notebook when connected via SSL
    The external IP my notebook is connecting from when connected via SSL
    My two friends connecting via SSL (external IP's)
    The LAN connected printer
    The internal Interface of the firewall (I hear this is fixed?)

    Havent even counted the server and media devices yet.

    Ah well....the product is free

    That would make a 10 IP Limit pretty much useless for a mobile VPN User. I almost allways get a new IP if i start up my 3G Mobile Card in my Laptop...

    How long is the "hold Time" for a used IP?

    Does it change with the 7.001 Update?

    The 30 Day Demo Lic. hides those dirty little Secrets because it is an "unlimited" License...

    Actually, it's my ball, and I am taking it to Endian. Virtually all the same features, but no licensing at all.  They have a "community" version, which makes sense since all the features are GPL licensed. This is the "fair" way to do it.

    Yep, I have been using it about the same amount of time, and every year was great!   I have actually moved on to Clarkconnect.  I was willing to pay for their product and services, as I had paid for AV/Content filter every year with Astaro.

    endian does not support updating the content filter automatically throught he community edition.  The way to update the blocklists is to install a new version or manually install a new blacklist.  Look at my earlier response for what i run.

    Smoothwall. Do you like Ipcop better than Astaro because of home use features or mainly in general? Have not looked at Ipcop in a long time, is snort

    IPCOP has a snort ids built in as well but not an IPS without mods.    Speaking as a one time huge astaro fan(just ask some of hte other long-time posters here), you can have many of the features of astaro for nothing in terms of software costs and more than 50% less on the hardware costs.  The integration isn't as good as astaro's but considering the issues i have seen and the issues i see on these forums plus the hardware requirements for simply running the software the value isn't there.

    It is really too bad that they are counting like this. As everyone states, it will drive some of us away from Astaro.

    I have been using this software for about the last year or so - with V7, I get an IP count of 14 which includes printers etc... Stuff that will never hit the Internet. With v6, same count holds at 9.

    So for me, back to 6.304 for now - I really like V7 but I refuse to pay for IP addresses that never hit the outside world...

    Just my thoughts.

    i agree with the others, been using astaro for about 6 years and i dont like what i see..so i´m using ipcop now(and the ppl i recomended astaro are turning into ipcop/pfsense also)..

    Can Astaro offer us something like a premium home user license?  i have three family members with 7.00x and i am banging against the ip limit...  US$25-$50 a year maybe for a more realistic (~25ish?) limit? I am enamoured with Astaro, and would love to stay, but if my only choice is buying a US$325/yr Astaro business license or abandoning this product and installing ipcop for free, it's going to be a no-brainer.  My loyalty isnt going to wait an additional several months with our network printers, ip cameras, and game consoles unplugged for fear of hitting 10.  

    I am tempted to segment my lan and migrate everything that shouldn't touch the internet, but thats really way too much trouble for a home network, no?

    After moving from Astaro because of the licensing issues, I have used IPCOP, ClarkConnect, M0n0Wall, and now PFsense again, and I have to say that I would move back to Astaro in a heartbeat if I could pay for a home poweruser license.  I refuse to be held back by 10 ip addresses, I have far too many devices on my home network to limit it.

    I keep coming back to check this thread and still no real answers from Astaro themselves...

    Well I have just installed IPCop with a few addons that give me the functionality I want - the only thing I don't have is policy based routing - but I can live without it. I just cannot handle the 10 IP limit on my home network and the buggy SMTP proxy since version 7 doesn't help - but I could have lived with it till it got fixed.

    I'd move back to Astaro today if I could
