New home user licensing more limited on V7..

And still no power users license... its been a good last 4 years, but now I must bow out...

Well, I read the release notes, and it looks like 10 user/10 ip addresses, with 1000 concurrent connections... however, it looks like they can shut down connections when it goes above %110 of usage on the 1000 user license now, and I am wondering if this will also happen with the 10 user license....

"Home-Use Licenses 
We will continue offering a Home-Use package. The new V7 package will be free of charge and will now include the base license, all subscriptions and Astaro Up2Date. But it will be limited to 10 IPs/10 Users, and 1000 concurrent connections.  
Note: Astaro will provide no support to home users and they need to agree to participate in Astaro’s Threat Research Network."

and this from the 1000 user section...

Within ASG software the limits for maximum IPs / users are now enforced in the following 
way: 
• The administrator will get an email notification if the IP limit is reached. 
• At that time new IPs / users will still be accepted up to a maximum of 110% 
of the licensed number of IPs (grace limit) 
• If the grace limit is reached no more IPs / users will be accepted

    And only 1000 concurrent connections where v6 is 32,000, lost on this?
    I am okay with 10 ip's, but connections?
    Maybe I am just misunderstanding this.

    Yes Ipcop has a nice add-on feature set of mods. Basically a code fork of
    Smoothwall. Do you like Ipcop better than Astaro because of home use features or mainly in general? Have not looked at Ipcop in a long time, is snort
    still an Ids or has it changed?

    /rant on  I really don't understand why the "10 ip address limit" is not "10 concurrent wan-accessing ip addresses." I'm looking at Astaro's logo, and it says "internet security" -- counting the number of ip's behind the firewall has nothing to do with the number that traverse it. /rant off

    I imagine that Astaro is waiting for its expert (home) user community to migrate to another product, notice the vacuum, and then reevaluate.

    what are our options for upgrading the liscence for home use? or is there a consensus on a different product (smoothwall, ipcop,...)?

    Good question.

    Ive been using astaro since 2002, and ive been patiently waiting for the migration tool to v7.  After reading this thread, I think my time is better served looking for an alternative than waiting for the migration tool.  The 10 ip hard limit (11, whatever) is a no-go for me.

    I'd gladly pay for a "pro user" home license, but since thats not available, can someone please say how much the entry level astaro costs?  The level above free?

    It's cost prohibitive for a home user.

    Did you note the little "note" at the bottom of the price list advising the IP count is for IP addresses going through the ASG, not beating up against the ASG from the internal networks.

    I don't call using the ASG NTP service as going through the ASG nor would I count any IP with filters setup to block them from going through the ASG.

    Something wrong with the counting algorithm.

    IPCOP has a snort ids built in as well but not an IPS without mods.    Speaking as a one time huge astaro fan(just ask some of hte other long-time posters here), you can have many of the features of astaro for nothing in terms of software costs and more than 50% less on the hardware costs.  The integration isn't as good as astaro's but considering the issues i have seen and the issues i see on these forums plus the hardware requirements for simply running the software the value isn't there.

    It is really too bad that they are counting like this. As everyone states, it will drive some of us away from Astaro.

    I have been using this software for about the last year or so - with V7, I get an IP count of 14 which includes printers etc... Stuff that will never hit the Internet. With v6, same count holds at 9.

    So for me, back to 6.304 for now - I really like V7 but I refuse to pay for IP addresses that never hit the outside world...

    Just my thoughts.

    i agree with the others, been using astaro for about 6 years and i dont like what i see..so i´m using ipcop now(and the ppl i recomended astaro are turning into ipcop/pfsense also)..

    Can Astaro offer us something like a premium home user license?  i have three family members with 7.00x and i am banging against the ip limit...  US$25-$50 a year maybe for a more realistic (~25ish?) limit? I am enamoured with Astaro, and would love to stay, but if my only choice is buying a US$325/yr Astaro business license or abandoning this product and installing ipcop for free, it's going to be a no-brainer.  My loyalty isnt going to wait an additional several months with our network printers, ip cameras, and game consoles unplugged for fear of hitting 10.  

    I am tempted to segment my lan and migrate everything that shouldn't touch the internet, but thats really way too much trouble for a home network, no?

    Well I have just installed IPCop with a few addons that give me the functionality I want - the only thing I don't have is policy based routing - but I can live without it. I just cannot handle the 10 IP limit on my home network and the buggy SMTP proxy since version 7 doesn't help - but I could have lived with it till it got fixed.

    I'd move back to Astaro today if I could

    I have just started using pc based firewalls at home this week after I found SmoothWall.  It has drastically improved my internet connection as I have a number of pc's and devices on my network and the Linksys obviously wasn't doing such a great job.  I'm now a total convert and am still looking for the firewall that will best suit my needs.  It was recommended that I give Astaro a try, but I must say after reading the comments in this thread I think I will hold off.  One of the primary reasons I was so excited about moving to a pc based firewall was the expanded capacity as I am quite often using bittorrent to download files, and since I started using a pc based firewall I couldn't be happier.  My old Linksys router would consistly freeze up on me when I used it, and I always assumed it was the concurrent connections that killed it.  I had to really limit how many concurrent connections my torrent client used in order to avoid the freeze ups.  Now with my new firewall I don't have that problem and things are working great.  

    I looked at the Online Demo of this firewall and I am really impressed by what I see, too bad it seems things have been limited in such a way.  I would really like to give Astaro a try but can't bring myself to do it knowing I may run into problems right from the start.  If there were a "Home Power User" option I may be a lot more inclined to at least try it with the limits in place knowing I could get a higher level license for a reasonable price.

    Anyway, just thought I would mention this.  Hopefully something will change that will enable to give this firewall a try.

    this thread startet in 01/2007 and we got no response from astrao anyway..

    so does anyone here  belive that some frustrated users will change the company business plan ?

    i dont think so..  astro dont change anything..

    i would also pay a higher fee for a "power home lic" oder maybe a "small office " version or whatever , but then with min. 25 ips and no limits...

    I also would pay for a home user license. I did (sort of) with the previous version when I paid for the AV stuff quite happily.

    Still miss Astaro though

    I think one of the reasons why Astaro has not released a paid "home user" version is that small businesses would probably be tempted to buy an extended home user version for a fraction of the cost of the regular ASG business pricing.

    This sucks for us that are power users at home and those of us into networking/computers in general.  I personally have more IP appliances (e.g networked laser printers, security cameras, media center extenders, access points) than computers!  

    All of these devices query an external time server every couple of days and thus take up a license seat!  Unfortunately, most of the devices can't be set to look for an internal time server.

    HOWEVER, I think ASG could bring back the home "Power User" license for v.7 and maybe charge a nominal fee for such a license if they wanted some sort of verification that it was used only for private home purposes.  Maybe they could further restrict it to those who are active on the forums as well.  I think this would work well and generate a lot of good will with folks who know there way around ASG.

    I guess I am another of these people who are going to say goodbye to Astaro after a few years - since 2001 and version 1.8 of the software. I even got SNORT running on Astaro and proof-read the first manual despite it being in German, a language I do not know. I am one of these people who have a large home network done properly. But there are only two of us here in the house. 

    10 Users would be fine. 10 IP addresses would not be OK. Let me explain.
    Four laptops with Wired and Wireless. [8]
    Two VoIP boxes [2]
    A VoIP Phone and VoIP phone line emulator [2]
    WiFi Access Point [1]
    ADSL Modem [1]
    Serial/Ethernet Box [2]
    NAS/SAN Box [1]
    Two Servers for VMware [6] but will be [8]
    XBox [1]
    Printers [2]
    Virtual Asterisk PABX [1]
    Virtual BitTorrent Box [1]
    Virtual Lightning Detector as Public Service [1]
    Virtual Mail Server [1]
    Virtual Web Server [1]
    Virtual Network Monitoring Box [1]
    Virtual Astero Box [4] but it probably does not count.

    So maybe I should rationalize this hardware. Maybe. But that is not the point. I dont do VPN... I don't do Web Filtering. High Availability would be nice, but not essential. So now I will start looking for something to replace Astero. It has been fun, but given the poor SIP proxy in V6 I cannot even keep the old version...

    I would also be happy to pay a resonable fee for a Power Home User License. 

    I have 14 devices that the software counts - including 3 printers!

    Come on Astaro - give your "testers - power home users" a break!

    Hey Fellow,

    I'am very disappointed what kind of new license Model version 7 ofers the home Users. I think it is a very hart cut for all the support and testing Community. I'am a Astaro User since 2004 and If they will not change the licsening model in the very close future will be leaving they community soon and check one of the described soultions.

    But what really drives me crazy that no one from the "officals" sad a word so far.

    Great news, in 7.004 there is a "Fix" - Fix [6098]: IP counting for licensing is too strict.
    On my install, Astaro is no longer counting devices that just get an IP address from the DHCP service.

    While musing over the 10ip limit and the lack of corporate response/presence on these forums I wandered over to the Astaro.com website, under the About Us/Management tab and read about the guys who founded Astaro and how active in the linux community they are (or were).  Anyone else willing to bet a weeks salary that all of the co-founders currently have greater than 10 ip addresses/devices in their home? (thus the 7.x home user's license would not work for them either)
