ASL Beta 5 More RAM, CPU, bad for SOHO

I'll agree to a certain point. BUT, that's what happens when you add more functionality. Can you imagine running Windows XP on a P-166? I don't think it will even install. Keep in mind that when v4 was in beta, it was a pig from a GUI stand-point. This is only beta, give 'em some time.
I'm using a P3-550, 256MB, 13GB machine that I bought used for about $170USD almost 2 years ago. You do NOT need a $600 machine. Your statement that "Even if the FW is free" implies that you are using it in a home/experimental environment. For that type of system load a good P2 or low P3 should do fine, RAM is cheap. I can get a P4-2.8, 128MB, 20GB machine for $275USD. With another 128 or 256 MB of RAM, that should be enough for a nice SOHO/SMB load. 

I just installed ASL 5.0 beta on a MU440EX/Celeron 366 system with 160 mb RAM, a Quantum 6.4 gb IDE drive and RTL 8139/8029 LAN cards.  It installed fine, & I can get into & around in Webmin as fast as with ASL 4.0x.  Haven't tried configuring & putting it to an online test yet, but so far so good.  

This setup might not accommodate all of ASL 5.0's bells and whistles; we'll have to see.

I have a bit of a problem with this statement. The fact that astaro has provided an open beta at all is impressive, and the key word here is BETA. These releases are filled with massive amounts of debugging code, monitoriing, and unpolished components while they attempt to glean/gather as much information as possible to ensure a stable, solid product. Rather than keep their beta closed, or even internal, they've openly asked for reports, feedback and otherinformation, but people in here seem to relish treating this like a final product and ranting on and on about how poor it is...

For the people in here complaining that their 350 P2 with 64 megs of ram will not run this, I'm floored. There have been countless posts about WE WANT IDS and WE WANT SUCH AND SUCH, and now your claiming that deep-packet-inspection, which tears apart each packet and scans it for patterns, takes a bit of juice? Say it isn't so people!!

In short, if your happy with ASL and concerned it wont run on your hardware, then don't choose to get involved with V5 at such an early stage until there is somthing a little more final and polished. It's quite sad to see guys tearing it completely apart, when it's far from done. With the prices of processors and ram these days, if it's such an issue, grab a new athlon xp and 512 megs of ram for 150 bucks, but please,  give em a chance guys. I'm loving v5 so far! GG astaro.

we are all happy about that Astaro has made our dreams come true. They never said anything about the recommend performance for ASL V5. It is sure that more features need more performance but then wirth information and .... and even with 256 MB it is [censored] terrible slow.........

We finaly got an integrated IDS, HTTP virus protection, POP3 spam protection, L2TP over IPSec and SMP  and more, so don't complain.

Who the f... runs a serius firewall on a 486 with 64mb ram anyway ?  

Bravo, Marty! If all you can throw at ASL is a 486, stick to Smoothwall. This is BETA folks. I'm testing v5 on a P3-550 if that isn't enough to run a final v5 with IPS I'll use my wife's P3-933 and she can get a P4-2.0 for like 275 bucks.
Function takes Power folks. I tested a download via my internal FTP and got 914 KB/s without IPS, 875 with. 30% processor. Not too shabby considering It'll be monitoring the external interface that connects to a 1.5Mbit DSL.

BETA, BETA, BETA 

Yep, Astaro's open beta is top-notch!  Thank you for putting your customers first.  This speaks very highly about the caliber of people who run Astro Corp.  Even though I've yet to purchase Astaro for my home network, I spread word about your wonderful product to everyone I know.  Two people I've talked to who own small businesses have already purchased licenses for their business.  

About the hardware requirements:  Be happy, now you can really justify purchasing a nice hardware setup to complement a very nice firewall program.

on getting this firewall for free to use it at your home-envoironment dont forget the point : ASTARO is an company and the people working there do a great job to make a Enterprise usable Firewall because the companys wich will pay money for this produkt will make it possible that you can get it for free.
Try to get a checkpoint for free and i think this is the class of firewall of astaro.
Without the right hardware dont try to handle a great produkt like this i think.
