Sophos won't Update on Windows XP

We have a user on Windows XP who's sophos quit working and refused to update.  I completely uninstalled his sophos and reinstalled version 9.7.  His sophos bega working again, but still would not update.  I uninstalled again, and manually removed his Sophos registry keys, then reinstalled.   Once again, sophos is working fine but will not update.  Here are a copy of the logs from the latets update attempt:

Are there any suggestions?

  • Hello BWright42TX,

how did you install? Eventually it tries to update from Sophos - is this the standalone version?

  • This is a standalone installation for a remote user in the field.  I installed from the downloaded installer file I have used to set-up dozens of machines in the past week and this is the 1st problem I have encountered.  He had an exisitng version 7.x that I removed.  As mentioned above, Sophos was not functioning at all prior to this (version 7.x)  Now atleast sophos functions, but it still will not update, either manually or automatically.

  • BWright42TX,

This looks like a credentialling issue: "Couldn't authenticate user for resource with host server."

When configuring updating make sure to type the credentials, and not cut and past, as there might be some hidden character that is messing this up.  If that is not working, the confirm you have the correct credentials for the product.  Support can assist with that.

  • My thought too, but the username and password are valid.  I have used them on multiple machines in the past 2 weeks,  Plus I just used them to go here:

    http://es-web-2.sophos.com/update/IDE/auth-test.txt

    and successfully got the message:

"Successful download of this file indicates that credentials are good. "

Which is why I am at a loss.

Understanding how Sophos works (creating a unique username and password in the registry of the machine for each machine)  I even went in a did a full uninstall, manually deleted the registry keys, then reinstalled and get that same entry in the log files both before and after my various reinstalls.
