CRT Clarification Please - Symantec will not uninstall

Looking for some clarification on this utility. Everything I read is pretty inconsistant...I hear there are 2 versions, a standalone and the bundled. Then I read somewhere that you need to create a "remover" folder in the root of  SAVSCFXP? Then I read that you can't modify ProductCatalog even though that seemed to work previously for me. Then I can't seem to find one example of anyone who actually changed the "ProductCatalog=" line in CRT...Sheesh were is all this info hiding??

So my issue is something we did not experience with CRT in the test lab. In the test lab I was able to manually edit the CRT.cfg file and the Product Catalog after extracting them into the CRT folder.  The only change I made was to RemoveSuites=1 in CRT, and for Product Catalog I copied an existing Symantec key but changed the version number and Key:

subproduct ProductClass="ps" KeyName="{B53661DC-CD94-4B14-B15F-D9DDCFF72558}"
                    Version="12.1.4013.4013" Switches="PASSWORDVALID=Yes REBOOTPROMPT=Suppress"
                    RemoverClass="SEPProductRemover"
                    DisableAction="CheckUninstallPassword;CheckUninstallPasswordFailure;CheckUninstallPassword.17E5C180_F281_4425_9348_3E891E7F8D1F;CheckHaveUninstallPassword.17E5C180_F281_4425_9348_3E891E7F8D1F;SetLiveUpdateSettings.FF07F38E_78C2_412E_B858_64488E808644"

Can anyone shed a little light on

  • Got it working.

    CRT can operate outside of the zip folder but product deson't like to.

    -Copy CRT folder and name copy "remover"

    -Open remover and extract CRT and ProductCatalog.

    -Modify CRT as needed, in my case enable uninstall of suites

    -Modify Product Catalog: Ad uninstall GUIDS obtained from registry to remove Sep 12.1.3 and 12.1.4:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

    12.1.4013.4013 = B53661DC-CD94-4B14-B15F-D9DDCFF72558

    12.3001.165 = C02FF081-3B1D-47BA-AA68-37D0EA4B75C5

    -Move CRT and ProductCatalog Back into data.zip

    -Deploy

    -Justin

    The singular resource is article 117835...

    http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/117835.aspx

    In that it mentions there are two versions - as you mentioned - a standalone version that can be edited with the help of either our Professional Services or Sale Engineering teams.  It's beyond standard support to update the standalone version on-the-fly as it normally generates additional questions, hand holding and other considerations.

    The integrated CRT is the one bundled with the anti-virus installer - Support can help with that because it's a product you bought.  You can manually set a few things with it and they're listed in 117835 (linked above) under the 'Configuration options' section.  One of the options is to 'RemoveSuites'.  The configuration section explains how you go about copying out and editing the files.

    Anyway, it sounds like you have got things work now.

  • believe me I went back to that article 1000 times, it made no mention of remover which is what a lot of people have found successing in using both for customizing, and to protect from file override.

  • I agree - for customizing the CRT you would have to create a remover folder etc. and could even add SAV before and after scripts etc. etc.  However doing all that isn't covered by the main Support team (Technical Support can't advise on how to do it and the KB won't have information on it).  Hence the article www.sophos.com/kb/117835 does provide all we can provide - from a main line support angle.

    If you needed help on having additional components removed then you'd want the 'standalone' version of the CRT and would need to contact either our Professional Services or Sales Engineering teams.

    To understand your situation: Since you roughly knew what needed to be done you were just looking for bit of info to complete the process and unfortunately, for this question, it's to talk to PS or SE. :smileyembarrassed:
