Sophos will not update to newer virus data definitions, even though update reports as successful

Strange Problem.  One certain laptops, the auto-update procedure is ineffective as it actually will not update the virus definitions to a new version.  I have a laptop that cant update from detection data 5.04G to the current 5.08 version.  Can successfully run updates without error, but no newer version is ever downloaded.  Now I have windows action center notifying that Sophos is out of date.  But no update will fix it.  Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but that does not change the problem.  Anybody know what is going on?  Can anyone suggest a fix?  Running version 10.3.1, 3.53 detection engine.  Virus date stuck at 7/29/2014 - nearly 4 months old.

  • Hello rooney1 and sda2UW,

    tried uninstalling and reinstalling

how did you install and from what source? After installing from the CID you will have the latest detection data version. Is it really 10.3.1? In the regular subscriptions (i.e. Preview, [Previous] Recommended, [Previous] Extended - which one are you using, BTW?) there is no 10.3.1/VE3.53 combination, it's either the 10.3.11+ or 10.3.7 version. Does it update the IDEs? There should be well over 900 if it indeed updates without error.

Do these certain laptops have something in common (besides the outdated detection data)?

  • Installing via a download link provided by a college (SUNY Oswego).  Initial download is an even earlier version than 10.3.1 and 5.04G.  Autoupdate brings it up 10.3.1 and 5.04G, but then nothing more.  I was aware that 10.3.11 was current, as that is what their help desk had and was expecting.  Mystery is why it isn't updating - and why it claims to be sucessful at autoupdating when really it isn't.

  • Hello rooney1,

this sounds like the (outdated) installer points to a stale CID, i.e. one that is no longer updated. AutoUpdate can still successfully download therefore it reports success but actually there is no new data. The help desk together with the Sophos administrator hould be able to sort this out.

  • Thanks Christian,

You are likely right as the problem went away earlier today.  Finally the detection data went from 5.04G to 5.08G.  I suspect enough people reported the problem that the Sophos administrater figured out what was wrong.  Interesting through, the Sophos version is still 10.3.1 and the detection engine is still 3.53.  Anyway, my immediate issue is resolved.
