Web browser stops working after Sophos Endpoint 10.0 is installed

IE and Firefox stop working after installing Sophos Endpoint 10.0.  If we turn off Web Protection, then it works.  What would be causing this?  I would like to leave web protection on.  It does work on some computers with web protection enabled, but not all.  Does anyone know what the problem would be?

  • Found out our problem was caused by an LSP conflict.  We have a program called NetOp School installed on the PCs.  If we reinstall NetOp after installing Sophos, then the problem goes away.

  • Having the same issue.

I do not have a solution.

To be more specific to the original description:

"All browsers are unable access (inter)network (other applications work without issues), untill machine is rebooted since restarting the Sophos service is blocked at OS level and at Application level does not work since the Application is frozen."

While BrianPaul's reply is just as helpfull as Microsoft's article regarding LSP conflict detection.

(They tell you where to go but not how to resolve the actual issue.)

This does however not resolve the actual problem of how it came to be why it is not resolved and how to avoid it in the first place.

I will elaborate the previous sentence since at least BrianPaul will otherwise take it as an insult.

It is great you found that your "enviroment" had an issue with "NetOp"... ... ... ... ... how?! Not to mention versions and such minor details.

Looking at my LSP listing (according to the documentation linked above) of at least 28 items untill the terminal runs out of buffer and giving absolutely no clue to where the issue would be.

And for all the haters feeling bad about someone ranting on the internet then you should realize that this kind of customer community is the major source for all things that get fixed only because someone reported it and there was not an alternate "because thats is just how it works"-excuse available. (Read 70% of fixed issues with software.) And now Sophos feels bad. Dont hate the player, hate the game.

So since BrianPaul have not since the last 6 months decided to return with more information the rest of us are left hanging.

  • This is unbelieveable.  I am having the same problem here in September 2014, over two years after this problem was first reported, with all browsers stop working in windows 8.1 with Sophos 10.3 installed. I spent weeks installing and uninstalling software as well as "refreshing" my window machine and going back to factory before I discovered that Sophos was causing the problem.   I had to uninstall Sophos to resolve the problem.  I have installed McAfee until Sophos fixes this problem.  Please let me know when the problem is really fixed.

  • It sounds like it's probably a different issue.

If you're running SAV 10.3 on Windows 8.1, then I assume you are using the new WFP (Windows Filtering Platform) callout driver (swi_callout.sys). Previous versions of SAV not running 2012/8 would be still using an LSP (Layered Service Provider) in order to examine web traffic as seen by the browser process.

So on Windows 8, following a reboot if it was an upgrade, then

netsh winsock show catalog > C:\windows\temp\catalog.txt

will have no reference to an LSP of Sophos.

If you run: msinfo32 under "System drivers" there will be an entry for:

swi_callout swi_callout c:\windows\system32\drivers\swi_callout.sys Kernel Driver Yes System Running OK Normal No Yes

There is also a new service called: "Sophos Web Filter".

If you still have "The Problem" and you're using the new callout driver then it's not an LSP problem.  WFP callout drviers can have similar interaction problems with other WFP drivers.  I know that certain Parental Control applications have started to move to WFP drivers rather than LSPs.

I would suggest revisiting it with Support.

  • Maybe it is not an LSP problem, but it is still a problem with Sophos.  When Sophos 10.3 is removed, the problem stops, when Sophos 10.3 is reinstalled the browsers not working problem starts up again.

  • What is the problem exactly?

    Pages load slower?

    Pages don't load at all?

There are 3 features that use the LSP/Callout Driver

    1. Web Control

    2. Download scanning

    3. Malicious website blocking.

Features 1 and 3 require HTTP lookups which will add a slight bit of latency but shouldn't be noticable for most pages.

Feature 2 relies of a 2MB buffer, so the browser can't render/use the content until it has been checked.

Note: If you disable all 3 features, the LSP will be unloaded at the next system restart when the Sophos Web Intelligence update service is started but is it one of the 3 features specifically that causes the problem?

    Regards,

    Jak

  • I had Sophos installed in windows 8.1.  I installed updates and at some point my browsers began not to work at all.  I uninstalled sophos and the browsers worked.  After making sure that I had all the windows 8.1 updates installed and everything was working I then reinstalled Sophos 10.3.  Again, my browsers started not working.  I finally uninstalled Sophos and everything is working again.  I have installed McAfee until the problem is solved.

  • l am still having the same problem with Sophos Antivirus.  When I install it onto my Windows 8.1 machine, shortly thereafter, my browsers stop working.  Is anything being done to address this problem?  Thank you.

  • Anybody there to answer my inquiry just above?

  • Hi Sandy,

Your link addresses Sophos Client Firewall, but I am having the problem with the current version of Sophos Antivirus 10.x

Is there any help for the antivirus client?  I notice that the recommendation is to upgrade to Preview package of 10.3, I don't know if this is the same thing as Antivirus 10.3 but, as I said, I am having the problem with the current version of Sophos Antivirus 10.3.  Thank you.
