Web browser stops working after Sophos Endpoint 10.0 is installed

IE and Firefox stop working after installing Sophos Endpoint 10.0.  If we turn off Web Protection, then it works.  What would be causing this?  I would like to leave web protection on.  It does work on some computers with web protection enabled, but not all.  Does anyone know what the problem would be?

  • It sounds like it's probably a different issue.

If you're running SAV 10.3 on Windows 8.1, then I assume you are using the new WFP (Windows Filtering Platform) callout driver (swi_callout.sys). Previous versions of SAV not running 2012/8 would be still using an LSP (Layered Service Provider) in order to examine web traffic as seen by the browser process.

So on Windows 8, following a reboot if it was an upgrade, then

netsh winsock show catalog > C:\windows\temp\catalog.txt

will have no reference to an LSP of Sophos.

If you run: msinfo32 under "System drivers" there will be an entry for:

swi_callout swi_callout c:\windows\system32\drivers\swi_callout.sys Kernel Driver Yes System Running OK Normal No Yes

There is also a new service called: "Sophos Web Filter".

If you still have "The Problem" and you're using the new callout driver then it's not an LSP problem.  WFP callout drviers can have similar interaction problems with other WFP drivers.  I know that certain Parental Control applications have started to move to WFP drivers rather than LSPs.

I would suggest revisiting it with Support.
