Unmanaged Stand Alone Client 9.0 on Win. 7 - Update doesn't work

The error is: Can't contact server. The address used is Sophos with the correct user name and password. I'm not behind a firewall, just a plain cable connection, no proxies.

Message: ERROR:   Download of SAVXP failed from server http://es-web-2.sophos.com/update/
Module: SDDSUpdate
Process ID: 4192
Thread ID: 5064

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks. Chris

  • All of our standalone clients are experincing this issue (as of Sat/Sun). Can anyone shed any light? All we're getting is a "Could not contact server" error.

It looks like something is out of date if it's still using that address.  The updates are located at http://es-web-3.sophos.com/update/ - I assume this is the latest version of the client downloaded from the Sophos website you're using??

  • We've got the exact same problem.

Sophos standalone v9 on Windows 7 new PC fails to update. Cannot contact server, both Sophos and Windows firewall turned off.

    Any solution ?

  • There are any number of reason that can cause this behavoir.

The first I would check is the index service is not causing a file lock in the cache folder. Please see the article below about this issue.

    http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/59494.html

Alternatively can you type in the URL http://es-web-3.sophos.com

Are you able to reach the address?

If not then please check with your ISP provider.

Alternatively please check the C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Config\TopLevelCatalogue.dat what is the content of the file? For version 9 it should read sdds.esc9.

Can you delete the contents of the cache folder C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Cache\   then run an update. Does the folder repopulate?

If none of these suggestions work then I would recommend contacting Sophos support.

  • Hi,

We have exactly the same issue with Windows 7 clients not being able to update properly. I've deleted the update cache as suggested and can see that it gets repopulated (although not sure entirely) when update is rerun. The GUI still reports an update error however.

Windows XP clients on the same network are unaffected and can perform updates normally.

Have also verified that the indexing file-locking issue isn't the cause.

Any more suggestions as to why Sophos clients do not update correctly on Win7 only?

    Cheers,

    Keith
