Preparing to update - Advice please on how to be 100% successful first time!

At the moment I have the following running on my server:

Sophos Enterprise Console

4.5.0.9

On the various Windows clients we are running:

Sophos EndPoint Security & Control

9.5

I've had a brief read through some documentation and it would appear that my first step is to update SEC from 4.5 to 4.7.

I've run the update advisor and it appears I'm more or less ready to go:

SQL server compatibility, SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported.
Computer browser service availability, Computer browser service unavailable, disabling the Enterprise Console Find Computers wizard.
Enumerating network adapters, Multiple network adapters detected. Remote Management System may bind to the wrong network adapter and not be able to process messages.
Restart pending, A previous operation requires a restart to complete file operations.

As far as I can tell there is nothing I need to do here, with the exception of a reboot on the server before I begin.

So to the first question - will the upgrade from SEC 4.5 to 4.7 be a smooth one?

Just launch the installer and follow the wizard and job done?

Once that is done - what should I be doing next?

Pointers and advice greatly received.

  • HI Aminocom

Can you check if the 'Computer Browser' service is started and on automatic.

If it isn’’’’t, this can influence updating and finding computers on the network.

(It shouldn’’’’t influence the install, but only there after) - Is there a reason why it wasnt started?

the second point it mentioned about the ip addresses.

The RMS component which handles the communication to and from the server/desktops relies heavily on ip addresses. if the server has more than one ip address you might need to specify the one ip address you would like to use.

(Especially if the one of the ip address on the server is an external one, to speed and ease resolution of the name)

more details on the above can be found at the below url:

The most important task which you should do is a backup.

Backup the database and the certificate file.

    :) - hope this helps

  • Hello Aminocom ,

Advice please on how to be 100% successful first time!

just make sure you do it right and it won't hurt to get a lucky charm or two :smileywink:

Joking aside - as wickedkittenz says you should do a backup before upgrading and reconsider the issues reported:

SQL server compatibility, SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported - so you upgraded your SQL server to R2 even though it created an unsupported configuration (but it is "just" unsupported not known to cause failures). Just make sure you complete the advisor, install should then be possible.

Computer browser service availability - so you didn't use Find Computers and it will also be unavailable in 4.7, no real problem here.

Enumerating network adapters, Multiple network adapters detected - although it obviously worked please read the mentioned article carefully and review your configuration. It's a good opportunity to tidy up.

After the successful upgrade you'll have to decide whether to deploy 9.7 to all clients at once or do a staged rollout (did you perform an upgrade before or is this your first one?).

  • Thanks for the replies and sorry for the delay in getting back.

Just to go over the issues raised in the upgrade advisor:

    Computer browser service availability:

The Computer Browser service is set to "Automatic" however whenever I go into Services it never seems to be started.

If I attempt to manually start it I get the message:

The Computer Browser service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs

If I use the "Find Computer" option from withing SEC then it does indeed find computers - so is it possible the SEC is launching the Computer Browser as and when required?

There is nothing appearing in the Windows Event log to indicate any problems.

So really I should make sure I go through the backup procedure - backing up both database and certificates and then run the upgrade from 4.5 to 4.7 and hopefully all will be well.

The 4.5 was my first installation and I followed the documentation to the letter - so default database names were used etc.
