Home Users/Standalone users cannot contact "SOPHOS" Server

I have several users that have the "Standalone" version that auto-updates with our username and password to the public "Sophos" server.  We have noticed that recently, these machines can no longer contact the Sophos server.  I am referring to the default server added as part of the standalone server - this is not *our* enterprise server.

What can I do to update those clients?

Thanks!

  • I forgot to mention, these are Win7 clients (still checking with XP clients)

  • I have had the issue for months with Windows XP clients. They worked initially and no longer do.

  • Did you ever resolve this? I would love for my clients to be able to update via internet connection again.

  • Hello mdp23005,

did you ever contact Support? It must now be almost a year that you are having this issue.

Sophos - as you will know - is not "a server" but a distribution network. Guess the standalone version uses the same names as SUM for the update server (described in this article). These in turn resolve to several addresses.

The AutoUpdate logs (ALUpdateyyyymmddThhmmss.nnnnnnn.log) should give some detail on the error. Following the procedure in the article you could check whether these addresses can be resolved and reached from the client. If this works and AutoUpdate still fails you should by all means contact Support.

  • Thanks, QC. I didn some testing last night and could download SAVXP but failed on RMSNT. The Indexing service is off. I will contact support.

  • Ah, it is clearer now. Please see Despite a successful update, Sophos AutoUpdate reports "Update has failed".. RMS is not available from Sophos (and RMS is - I think -  not included in the standalone version as it is an oxymoron).

  • Back at the end of April, begining of May our school updated to a newer version of Sophos anit virus.  Our school has one server that has the enterprise console on it that most of the computers in the school update from.  However, our Superintendent's office is on a different server, that now will not allow updates as it would before.  I can't even put the new version on that server but connecting to the main server, as I could with the old version. I have called support many times and left my number for call back, no one has ever called me back!  My superintendent is expecting me to have this issue resolved  by Monday (tomorrow).  He is getting very upset that no one calls us back.  I need someone to tell me what steps we need to take to either talk to tech support (beyond calling in and leaving a number....I have waited on hold for well over an hour also before...no luck there either!) or to get someone who can tell me what we need to do.  I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP!!!  THIS IS THE LAST CHANCE TO GET SOMETHING DONE BEFORE WE HAVE TO SWITCH TO DIFFERENT COMPANY!  THANKS!!!

  • Hello jgaskins,

can't say why you are on hold for that long or why no one is calling you back. I've never had problems contacting Support (whether by phone or by email).

Anyway - in order to try to help you I'd need some more details, especially which Sophos versions are involved (old and new - including SEC versions), how the different server is set up (does it serve as update location or is it a terminal server, was/is it running SEC, SUM or EM Library or just providing a share) and how it worked (i.e. obtained its updates) up to now.
