Hard disk constantly thrashing

Does anyone else have this problem?  As soon as I installed Endpoint protection, my HDD has been thrashing.  The light has not gone off for a week or so!  This is really slowing my computer down. Is there any way to avoid it?

  • HI,

Establishing the cause is the first thing.

Is a scheduled scan taking place?  To check, open SAV main GUI, it will show scans taking place in the bottom left (ensure you are a Sophos Admin to see all scans).  I doubt a scheduled scan has been running all that time but maybe they are "joining up" if the scanning options are too aggressive/a lot of data?  Unlikely but this is something that can cause a lot of disk I/O.

What happens if you disable on-access scanning, does it stop straight away?

Are you running Patch Agent?  Is it performing an assessment?

What can you do to stop it?  Does it stop instantly if you stop the SAVService for example?

If you use Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653 ), and enable the columns under "Process Disk" tab, does that help you to identify a process that is performing excessive disk I/O>

Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645 ) can also be used to identify processes with high I/O also.  You get stats on the number of reads/writes for example which is all helpful.  Maybe this could lead to an exclusion that could help performance.

  • Well, when I run process explorer and sort by disk reads it looks like "SearchFilterHost.exe" and "svchost.exe" seem to be the culprits.  I guess that's probably not related to Sophos, but it's funny that I never had this problem until I installed the endpoint protection.

  • I guess it might be worth seeing if disabling the Windows Search or cutting down on what it indexes helps?  Probably best to disable it just to see if that is indeed the problem.

I suppose as the indexer touches files, SAV may be inclined to scan them?  I can't say I've had to touch it and seeing as it's on by default and others haven't mentioned it to be a problem, it could just be that there are certain files on your machine that cause the issue or your indexing more or files are changing more often.  Might be worth using Process Monitor as well to see what might be going on in terms of "hot" files.

    Regards,

    Jak
