Sophos v10 & Dameware!

Hello:

I have same problem discussed in this topic:

http://forums.dameware.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&p=7323

I worked on this subject and I know that this problem occur because of Sophos Antivirus

also I contact with Sophos customer service and they are searching for a solution.

we are working hard and we find many things about this stuck:

-          there is no system log or windows event about windows service conflict, windows firewall  or Sophos firewall error.

-          we are monitoring in/outbound traffic on client and remote pc so find the connection is established but remote screen not shown.

-          There is issue while Sophos Services are stopped.

-          Just after uninstalling Sophos problem solved and there is no issue.

-          this stuck occur on windows XP clients and not occur on windows 7.

-          There is no issue in computers with Sophos Antivirus v9.x we find that this occur after upgrading to Sophos v10.

-          We test on clients installed Sophos Endpoint Security with firewall module and without firewall.

installed Sophos Endpoint Security 10 with Dameware Mini Remote Control 7.5 in Domain and Workgroup mode.

Thanks,

  • we had this problem:

Symptom - dameware (v7.2) shows "Initializing Settings" and won't go to desktop....

Resolution - Upgrade clients (we went to v7.5 but later versions may also work - haven't tested)

After upgrade, connect to a client and do Send > Send Refresh

If then get "Waiting For Initial Screen" stay connected and do File > Update Client Agent then Send > Send Refresh

This has worked in all cases I have tested

  • http://forums.dameware.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2536  might also be worth a look.  Seems like it could be a problematic part of Dameware.

  • Good Day

The workaround that Jak has given works,

I have confirmed with Sophos UK, htat the release 10.0.1 will have fixed this issue with dameware, its a automoatic update.

    Kind regards

  • Hi, is there any progress on this issue? The changelist for 10.0.2 mentions Netop, but not Dameware.

    Best regards,

  • Same here. When will be this fixed?

  • Hi,

I would also like an update on this matter. Our local Sophos support in South Africa tell me
it's a Dameware issue, but I disagree. I've tested various combinations of Sophos and Dameware
Mini Remote Control and the only time the problem occurs is with Sophos v10.x (10.0.1 and 10.0.3)

I've tested this with several different version of Dameware 7 (7.2.0.0/7.4.0.0/7.5.6.0/7.5.9.1),
as well as the latest version of 8 (8.0.0.102).

With all version of Dameware, the moment I go back to Sophos 9.x the problem goes away.
The moment I install Sophos 10.x I have to "Send Refresh" in Dameware... To me this is a Sophos
    issue and not Dameware.

Also worth noting is that this occurs on both Win XP and Server 2003, and not on Win 7 or Server 2008 R2.

We are holding back on the rollout of Sophos 10 for 4000+ clients untill this is sorted.
If it helps I'd be willing to help test Sophos updates or providing logs in order to get
    this fixed.

  • We are also having issues with Sophos version 10.0.3 with DameWare version 7.5.9.0,32.

Something I have also noticed along with having to send a refresh to clients running version 10 is the dual display switching mode in DameWare also now doesn't work with Sophos version 10.

Currently I'm testing version 10 on both my desktops; but am holding off deploying it to the rest of the business due to the DameWare issue (400 endpoints).

  • Hi Sandy,

Thanks for the response. I may speak for myself when I say the link you provided does not apply to the problem we are experiencing in our environment, but I'm sure it doesn't apply to the other guys in this thread either.

The machines I've done my testing with are on my local LAN, there is definately no latency issue at play.

(Connecting at 100Mbps and 1Gbps depending on which machine I'm testing with)

Previously I also tested the registry settings mentioned in that thread, and if anything it made the situation worse.

After changing those reg settings, as soon as I connect to a system which is at the login console, and log in with my credentials,

the display does not switch correctly. I have to disconnect Dameware and reconnect in order to see the desktop after the login.

It's as simple as this :

    Sophos 9.x + Dameware works.

Sophos 10.x + Dameware does NOT work.

I can roll back and forth between version and repeat this as many times as I want without fail.

Please escalate this matter to someone in Sophos who will do some in-depth testing/simulation

of the issue and provide some positive feedback.

    Regards,

    Roland

  • I have spent a good few hours trying to test and resolve this problem with no luck. I have tried testing the latest version of DameWare (v8) and then turning off different components of Sophos. This includes turning off behaviour monitoring, on-access scanning, data control and tamper protection.

None of this has worked. Only sending a refresh works. Surely the boffins at Sophos can come up with some sort of answer considering it previously worked on version 9.5.6. Something must have changed that is causing the connection to hang.
