Sophos v9 causing problems

Has anyone had the problem with Sophos home for the Mac with it causing Firefox not to download web pages? I was on v8.0.14 and upgraded to v9 when I had news of same. However Firefox v23.0.1 stopped loading web pages. When I removed Sophos the problem disappeared. Am reluctant to use it again. My OS is 10.8.4

  • Yes it did, however when I ran a scan the message 'This scan has never been completed' showed up. So tomorrow I'll turn the Web Protection on and see if it'll do a complete scan. Too late now as we've been out! Will let you know the result.

  • AFAIK, scans you initiate have nothing to do with Web Protection. A full scan of a full HD may take some time, especially if you're checking compressed files and the HD is slow. Did it have enough time to complete?

Just as a test, I'm running a partial scan, including compressed items, with the two Web Protection options off. That doesn't seem to be affecting the scanning at all.

  • Turning the Web Protection on made nodifference, it still said that the scan never had been completed. It had several hours to complete as it was scanning while we were out. Scan this Mac or just scanning my user section made no difference.

Frankly, since that is a whole different issue, I'd suggest starting a new thread to draw broader attention, perhaps including Sophos, and to see if others have the problem too.

  • How's that done? Can you suggest what to do or would you do it as you seem to be much more savvy on this than me.

  • It'd be best if you started it since you're more conversant with the problem and the configuration it's on.

Up near the top of this page is "SophosFreeTalk : MacTalk : MacHomeAV : Sophos v9 causing problems." If you click on the "MacHomeAV" segment, you're taken to the AntiVirus for Mac forum. Near the top is a "New Message" button. Click on that and you can start a whole new thread. Maybe with a catchy subject like "Even partial scans never complete" if that's what you're finding always happens.

Yes there are various people at Sophos who look at the forums, but not every day.

I would very much like to understand your issues with the web protection feature. I'll need to know some more information about the symptoms and sites you are trying to visit. Specifically:

    1. is the hang in Firefox only with certain sites? or every site?

    2. if this affects every site, does it happen as soon as you install? or only after some time passes?

    3. what happens in other browsers? I wouldn't really expect a difference, but its worth knowing if the behavior changes.

    4. how do you connect to the network e.g. proxy? any upstream filtering?

Our connection to the SophosLabs servers will first try HTTP then fall back to using DNS. Neither is guaranteed to work, depending on your network connection and any filtering that is happening. This could lead to the behavior you describe.

  • Dear Mr Cook

Thank you for your reply and it's good to know that you do check the forums, not all developers do. I've tried to answer all your ?'s as accurately as possible.

    1) Firefox hangs on 99% of the sites I use, the only one that opened OK was my credit card, Barclaycard.

    2) As soon as it was installed. I removed it, reinstalled it but still did not work. When web protection turned off worked OK.

    3) Same in Safari.

    4) Not sure what you mean by this, have wi-fi connection with Firewall turned on on my Mac. o/s v10.8.4 for the Mac using v9.0.1 of your prog.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Brynn,

Thanks for the update. One more question for you: what happens if you disable "Block access to malicious websites" (the top on/off toggle button) but leave "Block malicious downloads" (the bottom on/off toggle button) enabled?

This test will see if the problem is an issue with our network interception technology (e.g. the software that is filtering Firefox and Safari etc) or if the issue is our software's ability to talk with the SophosLabs servers.
