Sophos v9 causing problems

Has anyone had the problem with Sophos home for the Mac with it causing Firefox not to download web pages? I was on v8.0.14 and upgraded to v9 when I had news of same. However Firefox v23.0.1 stopped loading web pages. When I removed Sophos the problem disappeared. Am reluctant to use it again. My OS is 10.8.4

  • Hi Mr Cook

This did not fix the problem, the pages apart from the Barclaycard did not load. Turning the bottom toggle button to off cured the problem.

  • Hello Brynn,

Thanks for the information. Sounds like our network interception is causing the problem (rather than any network issues).

Do you have any other security software or network filtering software installed? Using the Apple Parental Controls feature? We do a lot of testing with the "stock" version of 10.8.4 (and I'm running it right now on my laptop with those features enabled) so we think there is something unique about your situation that we need to address.

You could send me a System Profile report (my direct email address is below). Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info... button > System Report.... button. This will contain a lot of detail about your system configuration, installed applications, etc. and might be useful to spot what is causing the problem. Note that although this report doesn't usually contain personally identifable information (and definitely not system credentials) you should review it prior to sending it to me.

  • Interesting.  I installed version 9.0.3 on the family iMac, with multiple user accounts.  I had Web Protection turned on (both options).  The product was installed for a few weeks before any issues arose.  Suddenly one day one of the accounts could not get to the internet using Firefox or Safari; every web page tried resulted in the message "connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" (I hope I got that right).  This account had Parental Controls set up and active.  I could not troubleshoot the problem, even when comparing the settings with another account on the iMac that also had Parental Controls set up and active.  I ran out of time and called it a day.

Came back to it a day or 2 later, and now suddenly both accounts with Parental Controls got the same message in either browser when attempting to access any web site!  The other 3 accounts on the same iMac (which do NOT have Parental Controls) had no issues.

A web search was the only thing I found that indicates SAV and Web Protection were the culprit.  As soon as I turned both options OFF both of the accounts with Parental Controls could access web sites they had in the past successfully.

As you suggested to Brynn, I can send you a System Profile report.  The iMac is currently running MacOS 10.6.8.

  • Hi,

We have discovered our Web Protection features are not compatible with Apple's Parental Control feature. There is a fix in the pipeline but it will not be released for a few more months. The only solution today is to choose whether you want Parental Controls or the Web Protection feature. Sorry.
