New download not working

I added Sophos to my Mac 7-10 days ago. Powerbook running 10.8.2 (Mtn. Lion) and very latest version of Sophos for Mac home ed.

I have never been able to do a complete scan. The process locks up. Each time i try scan local drives, the number of files to scan varies wildly. 600K one time, 2.1M the next etc. At first i thought the scan was completed because the scan window disappeared but the next time i tried a manual scan, got a message indicating that the scan had never been done before.

  • What does a completed scan look like? Is there a summary window?
  • If there is malware here, could that cause the program to hang up and/or freeze?
  • I have uninstalled and reinstalled once.

This program came highly recommended. Wanted to trial it to see if it would work for myself and some other individuals I know. So far, no good.

  • Try disabling automatic updates during your first scan.  Does that fix the problem?

The main strong point for Sophos AV is that it uses an on-access scanner that scans your files as they're used.  This is completely separate from the on-demand scanner you're running over your entire system, and works automaticalyl in the background.

See the other threads for more details on the issues you're experiencing.

  • Have turned off auto update. IT will take hours to answer your question regarding whether this helps. So far, it's making it half way through the process then quitting.

My real question is what should i see in terms of a screen if the scan is done and nothing is detected. i didn't realize it was just quitting mid-stride at first but there was nothing. Suddenly the status bar was gone with no info.

  • If it completes correctly, your Scans window should still be up, with a recent Last Scanned: date and "No threats detected" at the bottom.  If you turn on and set up email alerts, the scan results will also be emailed to you.

  • Well, i made it 90% through the process before it froze once more. Sure would like to know what to do next

  • Success!  After the last big freeze, i uninstalled the program, rebooted then reinstalled and it finally ran from start to finish once the auto update function was disabled. What a process!
