On-access scanning not working

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I have come across a few issues.

Firstly, if I log on, the Sophos shield is sometimes not in the menu bar. On-access scanning is still enabled (InterCheck is running and it detects EICAR test file), but it's just reassuring to see it. I did go to the menu and select "Show Status in Menu Bar", but it would not work. Curiously, it was already checked in Sophos Preferences.

Also, occasionally, I get a "fatal error" in the Console logs and it says that it is unable to configure virus detection engine. When this occurs, either the icon goes grey or totally disappears. In this case, there is no protection at all.

I did check the forums and there was a temporary "fix" where selecting "Update Now" would update the product and re-enable on-access scanning.

I assume this is because Mountain Lion is relatively new. Hopefully it will be fixed very soon.

I am on version 8.0.6C.

  • Same issue here.  No icon in menu bar.  Running Mountain Lion.

  • Just to be clear, not only is the menu bar icon not showing up, but real time scanning is also off when the product updates every 4 hours or so. So I must relaunch the Sophos UI Server app and redo the update so that the product works fully (every 4 hours). In the logs, it shows that there has been a fatal error and the antivirus engine can't work.

  • The fatal error issue and the menu item vanishing issue are two separate issues; most people have fixed the fatal error issue by repairing disk permissions, uninstalling Sophos, and re-installing it.  So when the fix comes in 8.0.7 for the vanishing menu item, it won't necessarily fix your root problem.

Do you have any error number associated with your fatal error?

  • There is no error number, just the message I posted previously in the Console logs. When will 8.0.7 be out?

I'm don't know, but iI expect it will be out of band (prior to the next monthly update).

  • I did another uninstall/reinstall. This time when I updated (past the four hour time window), the icon disappeared for a second or two then reappeared. So I guess doing a second uninstall/reinstall and fixing permissions again "fixed" my issue of not being able to configure the engine.

I did check the logs and there were no fatal errors at all.

  • Suffering from the disappearing Icon as well, and when it is gone, trying to update or retick the "show Icon" do not work. I will try the uninstall/reinstall later today on both my machines

  • I am also experiencing loss of sophosuiserver (menubar icon) after it tries to update.  I am using 8.06c on freshly installed mountain lion on my 2011 macbook pro 13inch.  Common and release a fix already, this is disgusting.  Also sometimes the on-access scanner get disabled but for unknown reasons.  ALso the uninstalling,  permission repairing, reinstalling does not work!

  • here is what you do!

    im running a mac - 10.8

go to this site - the manual update http://www.sophos.com/downloads/ide/

    download the zip

    extract the zip

go into your hard drive - library>sophos AV>IDE

with your extracted zip files copy all - and drag into the IDE folder

click the apply to all box and REPLACE all files

you will have to authenticate this with your password.

close it up, check your sophos preference AND NO MORE PAIN

  • I have followed your suggestions and am now scanning my primary harddrive and hoping for the best.  I came to this post after researching how to fix similar issues that I was experiencing with this software & I hope that this solution works.  Thanks for sharing.
