On-access scanning not working

I have similar issues as some other people here.

  • The menu bar is grayed, is says "On-access scanning not working" and there is no way that I know of to get it to be black.
  • There are occasional messages on the screen to the effect that Sophos doesn't work
  • The log file says, repeatedly, that com.sophos.intercheck: Fatal Error: Unable to initialise virus detection engine [0x00135240] Sophos Anti-Virus cannot continue
  • I installed Mountain Lion about 2 months ago but this behavior regarding "On-access" appears only in the last few hours.
  • I have deleted Sophos and then reinstalled it, with no changes.

For me this problem is new but I see that other people see it for a couple of months. I wonder if there is a workaround.

Thank you for giving away this fine program.

  • jim_julian,

What version did you update to? I tried to update and it old me I am up to date. I have 8.0.8c. I am getting the same, "Sophos anti-virus error", "Sophos anti-virus is not running". The menu bar item says, "On-Access scanning is disabled".

  • I'm having the same problem. Also says mine is up to date. In On-Access Scanning in pref pane, there is a red dot betore "The on-access scanner is off" and yet "Stop Scanning" is greyed out. So I can't even turn it off, then turn it back on. I've tried restoring defaults to no avail. I'm running Snow Leopard. Maybe that's the problem, but I can't upgrade to Lion.

  • The version that caused the problem was 8.0.8c; the fixed version is 8.0.8.1c -- update to this and restart, and things should be back to normal.

  • I am running Version 8.0.8C on an iMac and MacBook Pro, both still on 10.6.8.

It is fine on MacBook and greyed out on iMac. I had downloaded the update to 8.0.8C and run the unistaller as suggested earlier, it was fine for a few minutes and then revered to greyed out.

  • I had hoped for a reply as my problem did not quite fit those above.

I have downloded the latest version which is 8.0.8.1, not 8.0.8.1c as mentioned.

I used the remover on the old version, installed and it showed in the menu bar as updating, and then went grey again was before and says IOn-Access Scanning is Disabled'. Manual updating of the definitions works fine, but that's not quite the point!

    Cheers, Colin

  • I'm running 8.0.9C (on OS 10.6.8) and still having the same problem.

Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    J.

  • On access error is getting worse with updates. Uninstalled and reinstalled. Everything worked for a couple of weeks. Then got the error, right after an update. Uninstalled and reinstalled. Icon was black, then disappeared during immediate update after reinstall. Icon came back grey and on-access is not working. This is a critical issue. Sophos is quickly going from Hero to Zero.

  • I am having the same problem...installed Mt Lion...OSX 10.8.2, which is running fine, but the Sophos icon is grayed, preferences refuse to be set!  So it was free, I understand, but it used to run fine, not running at all now.  I get periodic Error Messages that it is not running.

If I try to scan all the computer, thinking maybe there is a virus in it somewhere, the scan runs down to the last 20,000 items, then quits suddenly. Has not fully scanned since August.

  • yep, that did it. update and restart.......restart required.

There's a new version out. Update and restart.  Fixed.

  • A solution that has worked for me is to 1) uninstall Sophos  2) RESTART your computer 3) reinstall the latest version of Sophos from their web site.

It is necessary to restart your computer before reinstalling to ensure a complete uninstall.
