On-access scanning not working

I have similar issues as some other people here.

  • The menu bar is grayed, is says "On-access scanning not working" and there is no way that I know of to get it to be black.
  • There are occasional messages on the screen to the effect that Sophos doesn't work
  • The log file says, repeatedly, that com.sophos.intercheck: Fatal Error: Unable to initialise virus detection engine [0x00135240] Sophos Anti-Virus cannot continue
  • I installed Mountain Lion about 2 months ago but this behavior regarding "On-access" appears only in the last few hours.
  • I have deleted Sophos and then reinstalled it, with no changes.

For me this problem is new but I see that other people see it for a couple of months. I wonder if there is a workaround.

Thank you for giving away this fine program.

  • I'm having the same problem. Also says mine is up to date. In On-Access Scanning in pref pane, there is a red dot betore "The on-access scanner is off" and yet "Stop Scanning" is greyed out. So I can't even turn it off, then turn it back on. I've tried restoring defaults to no avail. I'm running Snow Leopard. Maybe that's the problem, but I can't upgrade to Lion.
