On-access scanning not working

I have similar issues as some other people here.

  • The menu bar is grayed, is says "On-access scanning not working" and there is no way that I know of to get it to be black.
  • There are occasional messages on the screen to the effect that Sophos doesn't work
  • The log file says, repeatedly, that com.sophos.intercheck: Fatal Error: Unable to initialise virus detection engine [0x00135240] Sophos Anti-Virus cannot continue
  • I installed Mountain Lion about 2 months ago but this behavior regarding "On-access" appears only in the last few hours.
  • I have deleted Sophos and then reinstalled it, with no changes.

For me this problem is new but I see that other people see it for a couple of months. I wonder if there is a workaround.

    A solution that has worked for me is to 1) uninstall Sophos  2) RESTART your computer 3) reinstall the latest version of Sophos from their web site.

    It is necessary to restart your computer before reinstalling to ensure a complete uninstall.
